CASE FILE #073 — The complete disappearance of commercial candle-makers and tallow-rendering workers from Western cities between 1880–1920, as gas and electric lighting eliminated the demand for hand-dipped candles and rendered animal fat obsolete as fuel. Between 1880 and 1920, an entire profession vanished from Western cities: the candlemaker and tallow-renderer. As gas lamps and electric bulbs conquered the streets, hand-dipped candles became obsolete overnight, and thousands of workers simply disappeared from the economic record. This is how an industry dies in silence.
