I have been into anime since the 90s and started watching Japanese dramas in the late 00s. I'm still planning my first trip to Japan and started learning Japanese in the spring of 2024. I have no plans to move to Japan, and anime isn't the reason I'm putting in so much effort in learning Japanese.

My family is conservative and religious; my mother's worst nightmare was for me to get pregnant as a teenager. She kept a close eye on me and made sure that I didn't date until my 20s. Every 6 months, I went to the hospital with her to make sure that I was still a virgin. I had to prove I was still a virgin from a young age.

I watched the drama series a couple of years ago, and Mika's story had me crying like a baby. A few days ago, I finally watched the movie with Haruma Miura, and it reminded me how love can sometimes feel like a punishment.

I grew up in a conservative family where manners and reputation meant everything. I wasn't allowed to have friends and had to maintain a good girl image, which wasn't hard since I was a boring girl. I never spoke my mind and went along with everything my parents planned for me without questioning their decision. I became a woman who avoided conflict and didn't speak up until I started podcasting.

Last month, my sister took me to my first live concert in London, and it was such a nostalgic night. It brought back memories of when I started listening to American music as a French speaker in the 90s. I saw Toni Braxton, BoyzIIMen, Dru Hill and Joe live at the 02 Arena.

What I miss the most about the 90s is exchanging handwritten letters. Life wasn't convenient back then, but I miss the excitement of receiving a handwritten letter from a sibling or pen pal.
