In 2021, the Standards Council of Canada published a roadmap for how this country should govern data and AI. People from government, industry, academia and Indigenous organizations spent a year on it, and the authors said it would be out of date the day it was published. They were right.
In this episode I walk through what's changed since then. Bill C-27 and its proposed AI law died in 2025. This June, Ottawa released a new national AI strategy without a standalone AI law, and tabled Bill C-36 to replace PIPEDA. That bill is still at second reading. Meanwhile, Quebec's Law 25 and Ontario's AI disclosure rules for job postings are already in force, and generative AI and agents have changed what governance has to cover.
If you've been waiting for Ottawa to tell you what to do about AI, I lay out what to do now. Pick a standard to work to, name who owns AI decisions, put AI on the monthly ops agenda, and treat Indigenous data sovereignty as a design input from day one.
