Hello!
Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break!
Have you ever opened a closet so carefully that you looked like you were defusing a bomb? One hand on the doorknob, one foot ready to retreat, and a little prayer that whatever is leaning against the door will stay where you left it. Imagine deciding that this Friday, you’re finally going to organize that closet. You’ve watched one organizing video, found three empty boxes, and developed the confidence of someone who has not yet opened the door. “This will take twenty minutes,” you announce. The closet hears you and laughs. You turn the knob. Out comes a wrapping-paper roll, a folding umbrella, and a shopping bag containing seventeen other shopping bags. Then a Christmas wreath lands at your feet. Apparently, December has arrived early and would like its decorations back. Your friend, who stopped by for coffee, watches from a safe distance. “Are you organizing,” she asks, “or did the closet evict you?” You pick up a single slipper. “I’m making progress. I’ve found evidence that I once owned a pair.” Five minutes later, you discover a box marked “Miscellaneous.” Inside is another box marked “Important Miscellaneous.” Well, that settles it. Anything requiring two levels of mystery needs to wait until after coffee.
And today’s coffee is appropriately named: Fearless from Cager’s Coffee Hut. Fearless is our dark, earthy coffee, a choice to explore if that’s the kind of flavor you enjoy. Its name may sound adventurous, but you don’t have to climb a mountain to earn a cup. Surviving the mystery closet qualifies as an occasion in my book. You and your friend leave the boxes where they are, head for the kitchen, and pour the coffee. Suddenly, the afternoon feels more manageable. The closet hasn’t improved, but at least you’re no longer negotiating with it on an empty mug. Now your friend spots the word “espresso” and asks, “Does that mean I need one of those fancy machines with all the buttons?” Here’s a useful coffee fact: espresso is a brewing method, not a separate species of coffee bean. An espresso machine forces hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure, producing a concentrated shot. Different coffees and roast levels can be used for that method. So choosing a dark coffee doesn’t mean you have to turn your kitchen into a café. You can enjoy Fearless using the brewer you already own, with the grind and directions appropriate for that equipment.
The grind matters because different brewing methods bring water into contact with coffee in different ways. Espresso uses a fine grind, while drip coffee generally starts with a medium grind. Matching the grind to your brewer helps you get more from the coffee you’ve chosen. Measure your coffee, water and adjust to your taste. There’s no award for operating the most complicated equipment before breakfast. A cup you enjoy is a perfectly good accomplishment. Back at the table, your friend asks, “Are we going to finish that closet?” “Absolutely,” you say. “But first, we’re going to finish this coffee. I believe in completing one project at a time.”
