Nick Palmer is a vain, contemptable, person that is able to conceal his characteristics, most of the time, under a veneer of charm. However, to Jennifer, his wife, that veneer had cracked long ago. Jennifer says "Divorce. That's precisely the word I used, Nick. Divorce". Nick says "But Jen, dear, on what grounds would you divorce me?" Jennifer says "In the four years of our marriage, you have been unfaithful at least four times". Nick says "Ah, you can't prove that". Jennifer says "And, using the power of attorney I gave you, you mishandled my money". Nick says "You can't prove that, either". Jennifer says "Well, luckily I don't have to prove that. I had only to revoke the power of attorney, which I did this morning". Nick says "Oh dear. I don't like that. No, no, I don't like that at all". Jennifer says "I didn't expect you would". Nick says "I don't much like the idea of divorce, either. It's bad for my uh, practice". Jennifer says "What practice? You haven't bothered to take on a law case in more than a year". Nick says "Well, that's true. I don't believe in working if you don't have to". Jennifer says "And of course, using, or rather, misusing my money, you haven't had to". Nick says "Look, let me ask you a couple of questions. Have I, in any way, tried to interfere with your personal wishes, or tried to keep you from whatever you might have wanted?" Jennifer says "Such as?" Nick says "Such as, well, you know how I feel about Sheila, and the expense of keeping her at the Lawrence school". Jennifer says "She is a special child who needs the special treatment she gets at the Lawrence School". Nick says "All right. Have I ever asked you to give up those so-called art lessons of yours?" Jennifer says "So-called? What are you talking about?" Nick says "You've been going to the Chatterton Studio twice a week for nearly two years". Jennifer says "And what of it? Chat Chatterton is an old friend and I'm very fond of him. But that's all". Nick says "Now, I don't like to strip you of your security blanket, my darling. But you leave me no option. Unless you agree to leave things as they are, I'm afraid I shall have to take measures to stop you".
