After the killer sent a series of coded messages to Bay Area newspapers in the late 1960s, one was solved within days while the infamous 340-character cipher remained unbroken for more than fifty years. We look at the structure of the codes, the amateur team that finally solved the Z340 in 2020, and what the decrypted text actually revealed—and didn’t.
