Bleak House by Charles Dickens is a sweeping Victorian novel that follows the lives of several characters connected to the seemingly endless legal case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce. At the center is Esther Summerson, a kind and modest young woman who becomes companion to Ada Clare and Richard Carstone under the guardianship of the generous John Jarndyce.
As Richard becomes increasingly obsessed with the lawsuit and the inheritance it may bring, the case begins to consume his ambitions and relationships. At the same time, Esther gradually uncovers painful secrets about her own family and her connection to the aristocratic Lady Dedlock.
Dickens combines mystery, romance, social criticism, and dark humor to expose the failures of the English legal system, especially the Court of Chancery. The novel also examines poverty, class inequality, neglect, disease, and moral responsibility.
Through a large cast of lawyers, aristocrats, servants, orphans, and outsiders, Bleak House shows how institutions can damage individual lives while compassion and personal integrity offer a different path.
