  • 🎙️ The Architecture of Grief, Companioning, and Continuing Bonds John 11:44 Counselor Episode 22
    Oct 31 2026

    Host (Jeffrey L. Johnson):

"If you are standing at the mouth of an empty cave today, carrying the heavy weight of an empty chair at the dinner table, hear this truth: you do not have to grieve alone, and you do not have to apologize for your tears. The Savior who holds eternity in His hands is the same Savior who stopped at Bethany to weep with two sisters in the dust.

Let the community gather around you. Let grace unbind the linen strips of your shock and sorrow. And remember: what God anchors in His love never dies. Their story continues in the presence of the Father, and their legacy lives on through your resilient walk.

    The Benediction:

May the God of Lazarus and the God of all comfort wrap His presence around your broken heart. May He give you the courage to weep without shame, the strength to celebrate the life that was lived, and the eternal perspective to know that death has lost its sting. Go forth in His unshakeable peace, anchored in True North, and wrapped in His everlasting grace. Amen."

The specific quote used in BSW coursework (from the Fort Hays State University practicum and clinical documentation) centers on J.W. Worden’s foundational framework on grief and mourning:

"Bereavement: Working through the 'jagged line' of grief is essential for emotional stability."

  • 🎙️Matthew 19:6 Yet there are two and they must become one
    Oct 20 2026

The Regulated Return You have to make the intentional, regulated return. You have to walk back into that room, take off your armor, and step back into the friction. And when you return, you do not investigate their reaction. You do not ask them to justify their anger. You lead with extreme ownership.

You look your partner in the eye and say, "I realize I was getting defensive, and I used my overwhelm as a shield. I am back, I am present, and I am taking responsibility for my part."

You offer zero resistance. You completely disarm the power struggle by taking ownership first. That is how you defend the boundary of the "one flesh." That is how you use your own healing journey to breathe life back into a system that was suffocating under the weight of past trauma.

Call to Action & Closing The structure of Matthew 19:6 does not exist to make us comfortable; it exists to make us holy, integrated, and resilient.

I want to challenge you this week. The next time you feel the urge to retreat behind your armor or cast blame to protect your ego, take a breath. Regulate. But make the return. Be the one who brings the medicine into the room.

If you want to dig deeper into building this kind of structural integrity, I encourage you to check out my book, The Rectitudes of the Heart, available now.

Thank you for joining me today on Counselor’s Corner. Do the hard work, drop the armor, and stay anchored in the truth.

  • 🎙️ Counselor Corner Mark 2:27 Faith Meets Clinical Practice
    Oct 13 2026

This brings us to the Thematic Exposition: The Dialectic of the Soul.

We often feel torn between two extremes: the guilt of taking time for ourselves versus the burnout of giving everything away. You cannot maintain the rectitude of your heart—a moral compass pointing true north—if you are constantly surrounded by the magnetic interference of worldly stress.

Think of a traditional ship’s compass. It is housed in a stand called a binnacle. Because a ship is made of steel and iron, it creates its own magnetic field, which throws the compass off true north—a phenomenon known as "magnetic deviation." To fix this, the navigator must periodically take the compass, place small calibrating magnets around it, and isolate it from the ship's interference to find true north again.

Your heart is the compass. The anxieties, emails, and demands of your week are the steel of the ship, constantly throwing your needle off course. Scheduled "me time" and self-reflection are the calibration. If you do not pull away to recalibrate, you will navigate your life by a false north.

Anxiety is not a sign of weakness; it is simply the alarm bell of a drifting compass. By sitting in solitude and holding the tension of the dialectic—saying, "I accept where I am, but I commit to realigning my heart"\—we strip anxiety of its hidden power. We name the fear, and in naming it, we defeat it.

When we fail to keep our boundaries, we do not view this failure as a reason to throw the calendar away. That is where we engage the Socratic Elenchus—the deep, hard question-asking. We ask: "Am I pretending I’m healthy enough to survive without the rest I scheduled? What was I trying to accomplish by ignoring the boundary?"

This is the heartbeat of The Regeneration Loop. You Slip. You experience Illumination through CBT and the Holy Spirit exposing the false north. You enter Repentance, using MI to tap into your intrinsic desire to turn your will over to God. And you achieve Re-Alignment through Logotherapy, finding your meaning again. It loops because sanctification and recovery are continuous, dynamic forces.

The Application This week, you must establish effective boundaries, but you must establish them in the right order. Set up your schedule because you realize you need the Doctor, not because you are trying to prove you are perfect. Schedule one hour of absolute solitude. Do not bring a distraction; bring a mirror for your soul.

When you sit in the quiet, ask yourself the Socratic Elenchus questions: Am I using my boundaries to restore my soul, or have I become a slave to a rigid checklist? Where in my life is my 'hand' withering from a lack of grace?

Allow the quiet to expose the anxiety and the spiritual atrophy. Do not hide your withered hand out of pride. Acknowledge it, stretch it out to the Great Physician, and let your compass reset.

The Unified Meaning To bring all these elements into one singular truth: The integrity of how we engage the world is entirely dependent on the rectitude of our hearts, which can only be sustained when we remember that God’s boundaries were designed to restore our humanity, not crush it. We must bravely schedule the time to reflect, strip the checklist of its ultimate power, and place our feet on the solid, restorative ground of the Great Physician.

Host: You are going to face friction this week. You might even fail to keep your own boundaries. When you do, let the friction break your pride, not your spirit. Stop pretending you are perfectly well, and turn your control over to the God who restores.

I am your host, Chaplain Jeffrey L. Johnson. Until next time, stay resilient.
