  • Dr. Mike Siegel | Bridging the Gun Debate Divide
    Oct 12 2026

Can Americans talk about guns without immediately choosing sides?

The American gun debate is often treated as a contest between two irreconcilable positions: gun rights on one side and gun control on the other. But what happens when we stop arguing about which side is right and start asking where the evidence actually leads?

In this episode of Beneath the Obvious, Rick Hoppe sits down with Dr. Michael Siegel, a physician and public-health researcher who has spent years studying firearm violence, firearm policy, and the evidence behind proposed solutions.

Their conversation moves beyond slogans and into some harder questions.

What does the research actually tell us about gun violence and gun policy? How do we distinguish correlation from causation? Which claims are supported by strong evidence, and where is the evidence less certain? Can public-health approaches to firearm deaths coexist with legitimate concerns about gun ownership and individual rights?

And perhaps most importantly: is there more common ground in America's gun debate than the debate itself allows us to see?

This isn't a conversation about winning the gun argument. It's about understanding it better.

Michael Siegel and Rick Hoppe discuss what the evidence says, what it doesn't say, and whether there is a path across one of America's deepest cultural divides.

  • Words From the Tailgate | Billion Dollar Data Centers and Community Impact
    Oct 4 2026

A billion-dollar data center is coming to town. Great. But where does the billion dollars actually go?

Announcements about new data centers often come with enormous numbers: billion-dollar investments, new construction, jobs, tax revenue and economic growth.

But a billion-dollar project doesn't mean a billion dollars lands in the local economy.

In this edition of Words from the Tailgate, Rick Hoppe follows the money.

How much stays in the community? How much leaves immediately to purchase specialized equipment and services somewhere else? How much circulates through local workers and businesses? And what does the community spend in return on electricity, water, roads, housing, emergency services and other infrastructure?

That leads to an important distinction between economic growth and economic development.

A community can attract an enormous investment and unquestionably grow economically. But whether that growth actually improves the lives of the people who live there is a different question.

Data centers aren't automatically good for a community.

    They aren't automatically bad, either.

The numbers in the announcement simply aren't enough to tell us.

So before celebrating a billion-dollar investment, there's a much simpler question worth asking:

    Where's the money?

And ultimately an even bigger one:

If development doesn't make the community a better place to live, what exactly have we developed?

Words from the Tailgate is a shorter, more personal companion to Beneath the Obvious: one question, no guest, and about ten minutes to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

  • Words From the Tailgate | AI and Historical Upheavals
    Oct 4 2026

What if they’re right this time?

Every generation seems to meet a new technology with the same fear: This one is going to replace us.

Machines were going to replace workers. Television was going to destroy conversation. Computers were going to eliminate jobs. The internet was going to change everything.

Sometimes the predictions were wrong. Sometimes they were right, just not in the way anyone expected.

    Now it’s artificial intelligence.

So instead of trying to predict the future, I went looking backward.
What does history actually tell us about technological disruption, and what can’t it tell us about AI?

This is the first Words from the Tailgate, a shorter, more personal companion to Beneath the Obvious.

No guest. No expert interview. Just a question, a cup of coffee, and about ten minutes to see where the evidence takes us.

You have questions? So do I. Let’s go find some answers.

  • Tom McClelland | Can an AI Become a Person
    Oct 5 2026

    Can AI become a person?

We’re getting remarkably good at building machines that can talk, reason, solve problems, and sometimes behave in ways that seem surprisingly human.

But appearing intelligent and being conscious are two very different things.

In this episode of Beneath the Obvious, Rick Hoppe sits down with Dr. Tom McClelland of the University of Cambridge to explore one of the strangest questions created by artificial intelligence:

How would we know if there were actually someone in there?

The conversation moves beyond whether AI can pass tests or imitate human behavior and into the much harder territory of consciousness itself. What evidence would count? Are we too quick to anthropomorphize machines, or could we make the opposite mistake and fail to recognize a genuinely new kind of mind?

And perhaps most importantly: Do we understand human consciousness well enough to recognize consciousness somewhere else?

McClelland and Hoppe explore the difference between intelligence and consciousness, the problem of knowing whether another mind exists, what current AI can and cannot tell us, and how uncertain our view of the future really is.

No hype. No science-fiction predictions presented as fact. Just a serious conversation about a question we may eventually have to answer.

    Can AI become people?

Or are we looking at something entirely different?

Are we looking at a new life form, or at a new definition of what it means to be alive?
