Saint Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla gained associated statehood in 1967—but that was not full independence.
We gained control over our internal affairs, while Britain remained responsible for defense and foreign relations. Anguilla later separated from the union, and Saint Kitts and Nevis continued along the road toward becoming an independent nation on September 19, 1983.
Associated statehood gave us greater control.
Independence gave us ultimate responsibility.
This is the history behind the freedom we celebrate today.
