  • Grief Podcast Part 5: Anticipatory Grief & Ambiguous Loss
    Oct 1 2026

    Host: Dr. Krista “Ollie” Hopkins

Licensed Psychologist | Consultant | Wellness Coach

    Featuring: Dr. Rebecca “Emjay” Brown

Founder | Psychologist | Sexologist | Wellness Coach

Grief doesn't always begin after a loss. Sometimes, it starts long before, while we're still holding on to someone or something we love. Join psychologists from Balance & Birch Dr. Ollie Hopkins and Dr. Rebecca “Emjay” Brown, in this episode, as they explore the complexities of anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss, offering insight into the emotions, challenges, and experiences that often accompany these types of loss.

Together, they discuss the guilt that can arise when grieving before a loss occurs, the challenges of navigating changing relationships, and why conversations about death and loss are so important. They also explore how to balance the need for solitude with the support of community and why simply showing up for someone can make a meaningful difference.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • Anticipatory Grief: The act of grieving a loss before it occurs. While commonly associated with the declining health of loved ones or pets, it can also relate to the loss of body parts, jobs, or aspects of one's identity.
    • Ambiguous Loss: A type of loss that occurs while a person is still alive, such as in instances of dementia, Alzheimer’s, or the end of a relationship. It involves a shift in personality, cognitive capacity, or the nature of a relationship, even when the individual remains physically present.
    • Guilt: We note the common experience of feeling guilty for grieving prematurely, feeling they are "putting it out into the world," or feeling they are failing to cherish the time left with a loved one.
    • The Taboo of Death: We emphasized that death is treated as a taboo subject in the United States, which hampers open communication. We encourage listeners to talk openly about end-of-life needs to better support those experiencing loss.
    • Navigating Support: We discuss the difficulty of balancing the desire for isolation during grief with the need for community. We suggested that "showing up" providing physical presence without demanding anything from the grieving person is a profound form of support.
    • Integration: Rather than aiming for "healing" or "perfection," we highlight "integration" as the core goal of the grieving process. We compare grief to a ball in a jar; the grief does not disappear, but the jar gets larger, providing more space so one touches the grief less frequently.
    • Inconvenience: We agree that being in a close community is inherently "inconvenient". Individuals should not be penalized for needing to retreat or isolate during the grieving process, and that genuine community involves being there for one another when that period ends.

Rather than viewing grief as something we need to overcome, this conversation highlights the importance of integration, learning to make space for grief while continuing to live a meaningful life.

💬 Whether you're experiencing loss yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode offers compassionate perspectives on navigating grief, embracing vulnerability, and finding connection through life's most difficult transitions. You are not alone.

  • The Healing Journey: Trust The Process
    Sep 1 2026

🎙️Co-Host: Jennifer Lee | Reiki Practitioner

    https://balanceandbirch.com/jennifer/

🎙️Co-Host: Allie Aschmann | Hypnotherapist & Spiritual Coach

    https://balanceandbirch.com/allie/

In this episode, Allie and Jennifer share their personal experiences with healing and the tools that supported them along the way. Allie found support through Hypnosis and Inner Child Healing, while Jennifer used Reiki to help reconnect with herself, heal old wounds and navigate her healing journey.

The healing journey isn’t always linear and it isn't always easy. There are moments of growth, setbacks, breakthroughs, and lessons, and learning to trust the process can be one of the hardest parts. Healing is rarely a straight line. There are moments when you feel like you’re making incredible progress, followed by days when old emotions, fears, or patterns seem to resurface. And that’s okay. Healing isn’t about becoming a completely different person or never struggling again, it’s about learning to understand yourself, give yourself grace, and trust that every step is part of the journey.

    In this episode we discuss:

⭐️What does healing look like? (it's not linear: note that everyone heals differently and on their own time- there is no right way)

⭐️Our healing journeys and what we used

    ⭐️What growth looks like

    ⭐️Finding what works for you

    ⭐️Trusting the process

Healing looks different for everyone. Trust that your journey is unfolding exactly as it needs to, one step at a time. While our paths looked different, both experiences highlight an important reminder: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. What works for one person may not be what another person needs, and that’s perfectly okay.

Sometimes healing means moving forward. Sometimes it means slowing down, resting, feeling your emotions, or revisiting something you thought you had already healed. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress, awareness, and learning to trust yourself through it all. Your healing journey is uniquely yours. Give yourself permission to take it one step, one lesson, and one moment at a time.

  • Contentment vs Satisfaction
    Aug 1 2026
🎙️Host: David Kopp Personal Trainer | Men’s Coach https://balanceandbirch.com/david/ ⭐️ Guest: JD Tremblay Director of High Performance and Mental Resilience Advisor at Hungry Warrior Academy Website https://hungrywarrioracademy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/hungrywarrioracademy/ https://www.tiktok.com/@hungrywarrioracademy https://www.youtube.com/@Hungry-Warrior-Academy https://www.facebook.com/people/Hungry-Warrior-Academy/61559051615885/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jd-tremblay-2b6215256/ JD Tremblay is the Director of High Performance and Mental Resilience Advisor at Hungry Warrior Academy. He understands firsthand what it takes to overcome extreme challenges and rebuild yourself to operate at a higher level. As an Integrated engineer, military veteran, naturopathic practitioner, and ultra-endurance athlete, he’s tested human limits in some of the toughest environments on the planet, including the EpicDeca, where he was one of only three people ever to complete 10 Ironman-distance triathlons in 10 consecutive days across six Hawaiian Islands. He doesn't just speak about pushing limits; he’s proven the science by testing human endurance at the highest level. That journey wasn’t just about physical strength; it was about mindset, purpose, and faith. It inspired JD to write the best-selling book: Hunger For More in Life, which looks at what it means to push beyond limits and overcome mental struggles. He dedicates his life to helping Christian men, like you, crush their battles and rediscover their God-given purpose. This latest episode features a conversation between David, our personal trainer with Balance and Birch, and JD Tremblay, the Director of High Performance and Mental Resilience Advisor at Hungry Warrior Academy. They discuss methodologies for achieving personal growth, maintaining discipline, and navigating the transition from structured environments, like the military, to civilian life. Key Takeaways: JD argues that while one can be content, experiencing life and remaining grounded regardless of current circumstances, one should never be fully satisfied, as there is always room to improve, achieve, and grow. They distinguish between fleeting feelings and regulated emotions. They suggest that basing decisions on an emotional state, which can be calculated and regulated, is more effective for long-term growth than reacting to temporary feelings. Military service provides an external authority structure, but transitioning to civilian life requires creating internal systems. They emphasize the importance of identifying and writing down personal values before setting goals to ensure one’s actions align with their purpose. Principles act as a foundation; adhering to them ensures that effort leads to meaningful results, regardless of whether those principles are secular or faith-based. They advocate for daily reflection, through meditation, prayer, and journaling, to reset, stay driven, and avoid "buying one's own lies" or falling back into old, negative patterns. Rather than letting shame lead to self-destruction or paralysis, JD suggests using it as a catalyst. By acknowledging negative experiences or past behaviors, one can channel that energy into constructive actions, such as physical training or philanthropic efforts, to produce positive outcomes. They agree that suffering is an inherent part of life. Maintaining a driven and faithful mindset allows one to "take it on the chin" and rationalize the challenges necessary to become a better person. David and JD share sentiment on the necessity of being serious about one's life, values, and goals. They stress the importance of having a clear, definitive path and the willingness to accept hard truths to foster continuous improvement. 🔔 Subscribe for More: Stay connected for insightful conversations on faith, mindset, mental health, wellness and personal growth. #MentalHealthAwareness #EmotionalWellness #BalanceAndBirch #Podcast #MindBodyConnection
