  • Mind-body Therapies for Unlearning Your Pain
    Oct 22 2026
In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with Dr. Howard Schubiner, internist and a Clinical Professor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He discusses two approaches to treating chronic pain: pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) and emotional awareness and expression therapy (EAET). He explains that PRT helps patients shift their relationship to pain by recognizing it as brain-generated rather than physically harmful, while EAT addresses deep-seated emotions from childhood or past adverse events. He emphasizes the importance of processing emotions, particularly anger, in a safe way to facilitate healing. Howard Schubiner, MD, is an internist and a Clinical Professor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He has authored more than 150 publications in scientific journals and books. He lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally and is the author of Unlearn Your Pain: The Science of Recovering from Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Anxiety and Depression, published by The Open Field/Viking Press.
