Let's dive a little deeper into the Transfiguration of Jesus in Mark 9.

Scriptures Referenced:

  • On Mt Sinai Moses receives the Law, encounters God face to face, and has to wear a veil because of the brightness of his face (Ex 24:15-18, 34:29-35).
  • After confronting the prophets of Baal on Mt Carmel, Elijah encounters God on Mt Sinai and it appears he also covers his face with a mantle (1 Kg 18:20-39, 19:11-13).
  • In Jewish culture all things must be confirmed by two or three witnesses (Dt 19:15, 2 Co 13:1, Mt 18:16).
  • Jesus is the Messiah who came not just to fulfill the Law and Prophets (Mt 5:17).
  • All the Law and Prophets speak concerning Him (Lk 24:27,44).
  • Peter, James, and John would also become three witnesses to this event (2 Pt 1:16-18).
  • Jesus is the God of both the living and the dead (Rm 14:9).
  • Elijah represents the living because he was taken by God and never died (1 Kg 2:11).
  • Moses represents the dead as he died and was secretly buried by God (Dt 34:5-6, Jude 1:9).
  • God who once dwelt only in the tabernacle in the wilderness now dwells in us, His tabernacle of flesh (1 Co 3:16, 6:19).
  • Luke tells us they were speaking with Jesus of his death, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem (Lk 9:31).
  • We too are dead in Christ and raised to life with him (Rm 6:4-5).
