    It was this weekend many years ago that would change my life, forever. It was the weekend that I decided that I wanted to lead the race - if only for a moment - so that my family could hear our name “ANDREWS” over the loudspeaker. It was that weekend that I finally listened to the voices that mattered most, starting with the people around me - my parents and my brother - repeatedly saying “You can do it! We believe in you!” And finally, me believing their words and telling myself “I can do it. I believe in ME!” It was the weekend that I convinced myself that if I could do it on the first lap, I could do it again. And on 4 consecutive laps, 8,000 people in the Hayward Field stands heard the announcer say “ANDREWS, Ben ANDREWS of Parkrose is your leader”. It was the weekend that an Olympic medalist and Hall of Fame coach told me, “you might have woken up this morning a basketball player, but you’re going to bed tonight as a runner”. Don’t underestimate how the words you consciously hear others saying about you affect what words you unconsciously tell yourself.
