Easy chair Christianity may be the most dangerous lie in the church. Tim Melgrew challenges the idea that walking an aisle, saying a prayer, and “adding Jesus to your life” are all it takes to live out the relationship with God described in Scripture. In this conversation, Tim and Doc Brown explore what salvation really means, why “once saved, always saved” can be misunderstood, and how human nature draws us toward a version of faith that costs the least.
If you’ve ever wondered whether modern Christianity has been reduced to slogans and familiar sayings, this episode will challenge you to take a closer look. Tim, founder of EnjoyScripture.com and a Bible teacher for more than 25 years, discusses his book A Contract with God and the biblical concepts he believes are essential to genuine faith, including salvation, justification, and sanctification. He also distinguishes between knowing about Scripture and allowing it to shape how you live.
In this episode:
Why the sinner’s prayer may not mean what many people assume How the words “believe” and “faith” can lose their depth through overuse
Why Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7 deserves serious reflection The difference between wearing a Christian label and living a transformed life How sacrifice, repentance, and surrender relate to discipleship
Why rule-following and “easy believism” can both miss the point From the prodigal son to the wedding clothes, this conversation keeps returning to a challenging question: Do you know God, or do you only know about Him?
