Anything & Nothing Podcast

Hosted by Robin Heaston, the Anything & Nothing Podcast is a conversation series with the kind of people you'd want to sit across from at a kitchen table — entrepreneurs, builders, thinkers, and the occasional person who just has a hell of a story. Each episode is a long-form, unhurried conversation. No five-minute segments, no rapid-fire interview format, no script forcing things into a tidy arc. Robin sits down with one guest at a time and lets the conversation go where it goes — sometimes deep into business, sometimes into family, sometimes into the strange tangents that make real conversations interesting. The show is named for the range it covers: anything that's worth talking about, and the nothing in between that usually turns out to be the most honest part. The guests are varied by design. A former corporate executive who pivoted into something completely different. A craftsman who's been doing the same trade for thirty years. A founder figuring it out in real time. The throughline isn't industry or expertise — it's people willing to talk straight about how they got where they are and what they're still working out. If you're into podcasts that respect your attention and don't try to manufacture moments, this one's for you. New episodes released weekly. Anything & Nothing is produced in Columbia, South Carolina.© 2026 Anything & Nothing Podcast Relazioni Scienze sociali
  • 009 - Doc Fisher Pt. 3
    Jul 31 2026
Dr. James E. "Doc" Fisher returns for a third conversation. Doc is a former Marine, lifelong educator, and analytical philosopher affiliated with ERA USA. Born in 1933 in the Flint Hills of Kansas, he earned his doctorate from Indiana University in 1971 and went on to teach philosophy at Quincy College, Southern Illinois University, Allen University, and Cairo American College in Egypt. He first sat down with Robin in Episode 004 and came back for Episode 007 — and at 93, still writing and still chasing the questions, he's back for Part 3. This time we chase a single question all the way to the bottom: what is a thought? We work from the mechanics of perception — exteroception, interoception, and proprioception — through the split between physical, physiological, and mental existence, and into the philosophy of meaning itself by way of semiotics and Charles Sanders Peirce. Along the way we detour through Rob's AI-over-Telegram CAD setup and the story of two AIs that invented their own private language, before Doc lands his answer. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 Intro 1:08 Defining what thought is 7:31 Inner monologue and scientific studies 11:35 Perception and conception framework 15:22 Extraception and physical things 18:33 Interoception and body sensations 22:41 Proprioception and body balance 26:46 Physical versus physiological existence 27:37 Mental existence and dimensions 32:37 Form and shape in geometry 38:31 Perception from different perspectives 40:39 Hard sciences and reductionism 42:13 Mental versus thought definitions 44:28 Thought as the fifth dimension 47:10 Mental images and imagination 52:39 Emotion and mental feelings 57:34 Conation and volition in action 59:49 Conception as intellectual experience 1:02:22 Semiosis and meaning creation 1:06:33 Semiotics and sign systems 1:16:49 Large language models and AI language 1:19:48 Multiple meanings of the word meaning 1:24:51 Thought as inner and outer voice 1:26:51 CAD software and AI integration 1:29:10 Conception versus creation process 1:31:39 Thought before linguistics 1:34:34 Creating a new podcast channel ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ GUEST LINKS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Dr. James E. • 008 - Rick Starnes
    Jul 25 2026
Rick Starnes is the founder of Courage to Walk. Born in Germany as an Air Force brat, he landed in Columbia after his parents split and has spent most of his life in Kershaw County, South Carolina. He has walked away from multiple six-figure positions — and now helps other people build a realistic exit ramp out of jobs they have outgrown. Rick is candid in this one. We get into the panic attack that stopped him cold, the drinking that came with a promotion he thought he wanted, and a 3D-printing business that did not survive COVID. From there it turns practical: what a real exit plan looks like with gates, checkpoints and 90-day reviews instead of vague someday-thinking, why accountability only works when somebody is actually watching, and how he defines success now versus what he was chasing before. We also spend a long stretch on AI — what it is doing to hiring, writing and coding, and why he thinks the interesting part is still the human on the other end. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 Intro 0:47 Early life and military background 2:23 Growing up in Columbia South Carolina 3:09 Outdoor interests and hobbies 5:02 Current AI exploration 6:59 Defining success in formative years 8:31 Early family struggles and basketball 8:52 Transition from six-figure jobs 11:27 Multiple career industries and portability 17:29 Identifying what you're leaving 19:20 Courage to Walk exit planning framework 21:32 Career fulfillment versus income 23:37 Marriage and relationship philosophy 24:31 Family support during transitions 26:23 Goal-setting without perpetual postponement 28:11 Freedom plans and accountability checkpoints 29:49 Task completion and self-motivation 31:37 AI as a tool not replacement 33:35 College education and coding background 36:28 AI and peptide research passions 38:43 Spirituality and deeper meaning 42:09 Global conflict and control 44:29 Reading for pleasure and fiction 46:01 Courage to Walk book and platform goals 47:51 Success portability in leadership 48:58 Building the One Life Left app 54:13 Best advice on productive conflict 54:59 Male role models and character 56:29 Self-reliance and work ethic 57:11 Changing past unkindness 59:55 Final wisdom and closing ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ GUEST LINKS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Rick Starnes / Courage to Walk Website: https://couragetowalk.com ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ANYTHING & NOTHING PODCAST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌐 anythingandnothingpodcast.com 📘 facebook.com/AnythingAndNothingPodcast 📷 instagram.com/AnythingAndNothingPodcast Want to be a guest? www.anythingandnothingpodcast.com/be-a-guest Subscribe for new episodes weekly. #AnythingAndNothingPodcast #RickStarnes #CourageToWalk #CareerChange #PersonalGrowth #Accountability #Entrepreneurship #ColumbiaSC

Dr. James E. "Doc" Fisher returns to the show. Doc is a former Marine, lifelong educator, and analytical philosopher affiliated with ERA USA — first appeared on the pod in Episode 004, and this one picks up where that conversation left off. We go deeper on Doc's Marine Corps years (Camp Pendleton, 81mm mortar platoon, "playing war" post-Korea), the ethical questions AI is now forcing into military decision-making, race as a category and how he first ran into racism as a kid in rural Kansas, the John Dewey pragmatism he returns to over and over, and the analytical distinction between the psyche, the mind, and the physical body he's still working out at 93. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 Intro & Welcome 1:07 Marine Corps Experience 3:00 Boot Camp And Personal Development 5:52 Military Secrecy And Warfare 7:38 AI Ethics In Warfare 9:27 Interracial Relationships And Racism 12:01 Defining Race And Evolution 18:00 Racism Origins And Teaching 25:41 House Arson And Explicit Racism 31:24 Emotional Response To Racism 39:23 John Dewey And Pragmatism 46:39 Thought Formation And Language 56:40 Dewey's Core Philosophy 1:00:12 Closing Remarks And Practice ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ GUEST LINKS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Dr. James E.
