This wise and hilarious proverb is usually attributed to Robert A. Heinlein, and was also used by Robert Anton Wilson, although its true origin is somewhat debatable or uncertain. Its staying power comes from how elegantly it captures a fundamental truth about effort, receptivity, and discernment. On the surface, it means: "Don't try to educate, persuade, or transform someone who has neither the desire nor the capacity to receive what you're offering."

There is a very old trick by which empires make themselves appear necessary: they persuade human beings that their value is measured by their usefulness to the machine.

The Pharaoh needs workers. The Roman Empire needs soldiers and taxpayers. The feudal lord needs peasants producing grain. The industrial capitalist needs labor. The modern corporation needs "human resources"— which is perhaps the most straight up Orwellian Skynet phrase ever invented, and if they cease to produce—through illness, age, disability, unemployment, or simply exhaustAion—they are subtly invited to regard themselves as having become less of a person. That is the great moral fraud of a production-obsessed society because a human being is not a commercial trader but also not even a unit of economic output.

The mentally weak authoritarian hates (which is really fears) voting by mail because it's democratic - because that particular voting mechanism loosens the physical and psychological control surrounding the act of voting, opening it up to more citizens. The polling place is a bounded space. It has a time, a location, an atmosphere, officials, observers, procedures, and bad lighting - You arrive, perform the ritual, and leave, and we've talked about how claims of voter fraud are dog whistle for voter suppression, part of that suppression is making it harder to do even that basic process.

Voting by mail moves the political act out of that controlled theater and into a more open sphere. You can fill it out when you aren't exhausted from work in late stage de-regulated capital mixed with late stage empire, when you aren't worried about the time it's gonna take, transportation, or childcare. Mail voting actually gives democratic society something authoritarianism hates and thus fears: options via more time. It takes time to be part of the democratic process. It takes us at least a full day, if not a couple days to look into and research every candidate on a local or national ballot. And it should take you that much time as well. Then we need space to participate without having to rearrange our entire life that week or month around the machinery of one single Election Day. Which matters enormously.

Doomscrolling is the act of spending an excessive amount of time on digital content that elicits negative emotion and it is metaphysically grotesque. One can take the most extraordinary instrument ever devised for the circulation of human thought, and reduce it to a slot machine for anxiety.

This “flattened schizophrenic scroll matrix” highlights that the problem isn't simply that you're looking at too much information but that the information has been stripped of scale, context, sequence, and consequence. Headlines, gossip, scandals, recipes, culinary photos, so so memes, lukewarm jokes, arguments between strangers - hundreds of realities without inhabiting any of them. All of which arrive through essentially the same little rectangular aperture. And then you scroll it.

In occultism there is the concept of binary. Meaning two. One aspect of this basic spiritual teaching is that we materially exist in binary reality. Meaning a two thing condition. For example - of Sun / day / (male) and moon / night / female. And why don't we call our daughters our moons? Think about that. In William Walker Atkinson's text the Kybalion, which if you are interested in knowing things is worth a read, there is the principle of polarity - Which says "Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet." And unlike other weaklings in philosophical, psychological, ecological, and supposedly spiritual spaces who placate to privilege & power cause they are scared of losing audience and thus don't talk about the political, we aim to speak justice & truth and will thus be incorporating this into are you smarter than a 5th grader in economics and politics.

In late 2025 to early 2026, we may have done a bit of helping out working on the Spielberg film Disclosure Day. Theodore Sturgeon, the science fiction writer, when responding to critics who said "ninety percent of science fiction is crap" said "Ninety percent of everything is crap". This is one of the most useful epistemological tools ever invented. It applies to anything made by man. Including start ups and religion! And nowhere does it apply more beautifully than to crop circles and UFO's!

The mistake made by both believers and debunkers is that they refuse to acknowledge Sturgeon's Law. The believer says: "Every UFO is an alien spacecraft." The debunker says: "Every UFO is Venus or a weather balloon." Neither position survives contact with reality. The mature position begins with: "Most reports are probably mundane. The interesting question is the remainder." That is how science actually works.

There is a quote in Julien Benda's book "Treason Of The Intellectuals" which goes something approximately like "We have two options in life. We can serve justice & truth or privilege & power. The more we make compromises to those in privilege & power, the more we diminish our capacity for justice & truth. Better as an intellectual or an artist, to always be a heretic".

Benda overstood something that every age conspires to make us forget: the intellectual exists not to decorate power, but to disturb it. The moment the writer, the professor, the journalist, or the artist begins asking, "How will this affect my access? My reputation? My invitations? My grants? My career?" they have already begun the transaction that Benda called treason.
