Alone at 29 Meters: How She Mapped Her Own Rescue

Fear tightens in the throat when you imagine being alone in a flooded cave with one-third of your air left and no light - Marilyn Roberts survived seventy-seven hours like that and left a dry, folded map at the sink’s lip; how did that paper travel nine meters through fractured limestone and arrive crisp and readable? What compelled her to draw a map in total darkness with scarce air and no working light?

In this episode, we follow the timeline from the April 11 solo dive through the discovery of the map on April 14 and the subsequent rescue response, laying out the decisions and conditions that shaped Marilyn’s survival and the unanswered question about the paper’s journey.

Person: Marilyn Roberts
Date: April 11, 2019 (dive); April 14, 2019 (map found)
Location: Culver Sink, north-central Florida
Age: 28 years old
Experience: Six years cave diving

- Map found at 6:42 AM on April 14, 2019, folded card-stock dry at the edges and fold with handwriting "If found, I am inside. MW depth ~28. April 11."
- Marilyn entered Culver Sink alone at approximately 6:55 AM on April 11, 2019, on a solo survey dive.
- Culver Sink survey in 1991 recorded roughly 200 feet of penetration before a narrowing; Marilyn passed that narrowing in January 2019 to find a multi-chamber system.
- At depth of about 29 meters, a silt event and a downward shift pulled her guideline into sediment, making the line "gone" per her hospital debrief.
- Marilyn had one-third of her air remaining and no working light when she chose to spend hours making a map inside the cave.
