  • Joining the Military? Here's What Happens Before Boot Camp
    Oct 10 2026

Thinking about joining the military? What actually happens between meeting a recruiter and shipping off to boot camp?

In Episode 2 of Find Your Bearing, a series from All In. Always., we're walking through the military enlistment process from start to finish.

After 24 years in the U.S. Navy, I know how confusing the process can seem when you're just getting started. Between the ASVAB, MEPS, choosing a military job, the Delayed Entry Program, and finally shipping out, there's a lot to understand before you ever put on a uniform.

    In this episode, we're covering:

    • The Recruiter: What to expect from your first conversation and why you need to ask questions.
    • The ASVAB: What your scores mean and how they affect your military career options.
    • Choosing Your Job: Qualifications, requirements, availability, and making an informed decision.
    • MEPS: What happens during medical screening, testing, and enlistment processing.
    • The Classifier: Understanding your available job options and enlistment agreement.
    • The Delayed Entry Program (DEP): What happens while you're waiting for your ship date.
    • Preparing for Boot Camp: How to use that waiting period to get yourself ready.
    • Shipping Out: Final processing, saying goodbye, and taking that first step toward military service.

I'll also share some of my own experiences joining the Navy in 1997, along with lessons learned and a little humor along the way.

This isn't a recruiting pitch. It's an opportunity to better understand the process, ask the right questions, and make informed decisions about your future.

Whether you're considering the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force, this episode is for you.

Military recruiting requirements and procedures can change, so always verify current information with your recruiter and official service resources.

  • Thinking About Joining the Military? Watch This Before You Sign Anything
    Oct 3 2026

Thinking about joining the military? Before you choose a branch, pick a job, or sign a contract, there are some questions worth asking yourself first.

In the first episode of Find Your Bearing, a new series from All In. Always., I draw on 24 years of Navy service to help prospective service members think through one of the biggest decisions they may ever make. This isn't a recruiting pitch—and it isn't an argument against serving. It's information, perspective, and lessons learned from someone who's been on the other side of that decision.

We’ll talk about why you want to serve, choosing a branch and career field, understanding what a recruiter can and can't promise, what military life actually asks of you, talking to people who have done the job you're considering, and why you should think about what you want to leave the military with before you've even joined.

Whether you're 18 and considering your first step after high school or you're later in life looking for a new direction, the goal is simple: ask better questions before making a life-changing decision.

Find Your Bearing is for those thinking about joining, currently serving, preparing to transition, and navigating life after service.

    Direction is a Mindset.

  • Before Paramedics: How the Ambulance Became an Emergency Room on Wheels
    Sep 24 2026

There was a time when calling an ambulance didn't mean medical care was coming to you. It meant transportation was coming to take you to medical care.

In this episode of All In. Always., we trace the evolution of EMS from early casualty evacuation and ambulance transportation to the modern EMTs and paramedics who bring emergency medicine directly to the patient.

We follow the lessons learned on the battlefield, the problems exposed by America's highway death crisis, the landmark 1966 Accidental Death and Disability report, the birth of modern EMT training, and the pioneering work of Pittsburgh's Freedom House Ambulance Service. From there, we look at the rise of paramedicine, medical control, 911, trauma systems, and the expansion of emergency medicine into the air through helicopters and fixed-wing critical-care transport.

It's a story about much more than the ambulance.

It's the story of how emergency care moved out of the hospital and into the street—and how the people answering the call became highly trained medical professionals capable of beginning lifesaving treatment almost anywhere.

From “put them in the back and drive” to sophisticated prehospital medicine, this is the history of EMS.

🚑 If you're an EMT, paramedic, flight medic, dispatcher, or part of the EMS community, tell me what brought you into the profession.
