Liberia gets introduced to the world as an exception: the first African republic, never formally colonized, a Black flag flying through the colonial era. That story is true, but it is not complete. We start with the country’s motto, “The love of liberty brought us here,” and ask the question people avoid: whose love, whose liberty, and who counts as “us” when a nation is built by settlers on land that already belongs to many Indigenous peoples?

We walk back through Liberia’s founding via the American Colonization Society, the creation of a state shaped by U.S. institutions, and the rise of Americo-Liberian minority rule that locked most Liberians out of meaningful franchise. Then we follow the money: Firestone’s rubber concession, lopsided resource deals, debt bondage, iron ore enclaves, and “growth without development.” We also explain how the flag of convenience turns sovereignty into a rentable product, and how diamonds and timber become fuel for civil war.
