What does it take to break into hip-hop photography and document a culture that already has such a rich visual history? On this episode of Behind the Beat, I’m sitting down with photographer Adam Capturez to talk about his career behind the camera and his experience documenting the hip-hop scene.Adam has been pursuing hip-hop photography for a little under two years, but his connection to street culture goes back much further through his background as a skateboarder. We talk about the relationship between skateboarding and hip-hop, how that experience shaped his perspective, and what ultimately led him to photography.Adam also breaks down what it's like getting access to artists and events, developing his own photographic eye, building relationships within the hip-hop community, and capturing moments that might otherwise go undocumented. We also get into the history of hip-hop photography, the influence of legendary photographers, photographing cyphers and emerging artists, the importance of giving photographers proper credit, and how social media has changed the way photographers build their careers. And because he's still relatively early in his journey, we talk about the challenges of establishing yourself, learning on the job, and figuring out what kind of photographer you ultimately want to become.
