The anchor case of our first episode, taken alone and at full length. Anneliese Michel (1952–1976), of Klingenberg am Main, Bavaria — one case, one girl, start to finish: who she was when she was healthy, what happened to her, and the recordings, played in the order the case made them.
Sixty-seven sessions. Forty-plus hours of tape. Her own words — including her complete handwritten crisis note of July 1st, 1975, read aloud in full for the first time — a priest's session protocols, her diary, and the photographs a courtroom would later have to look at. The evidence in this case survived. And the evidence is worse than the legend.
If the tapes had never been made — if all of this had survived only as a priest's diary, the way it does in 1949 — would you believe a word of it? And if your answer is no, then tell me: what exactly did the sound of her voice change?
