A belief system can give you purpose, community, and a ready-made identity and it can also quietly take your life out of your own hands. We’re joined by author Margaret Eastman Smith to talk about her memoir, A Spectacular Inheritance: What I Kept and What I Left Behind, and what it really takes to separate your self from a powerful group without turning your whole past into “all bad.”

Margaret walks us through growing up inside Moral Rearmament (later renamed Initiatives of Change), a movement built around “absolute honesty, absolute purity, absolute unselfishness, and absolute love.” We unpack why those ideals can feel inspiring on the surface, yet still create a high-control culture underneath: enmeshment, people-pleasing, scripted relationships, fear of judgment, and the constant pressure to prove you’re a good person by staying the course. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a family system, a relationship, a job, or a religion that no longer fits, you’ll recognize the emotional logic.

We also get practical about recovery and rebuilding identity after leaving. Margaret shares the incremental steps that helped her learn self-trust, from choosing small “for me” pursuits to going to college at 35, building a career, and learning to make decisions without certainty. We talk grief, loneliness, and how spirituality can shift from external authority to internal attunement through mindfulness, meditation, writing, poetry, and presence.
