Cancer doesn’t land on one person, it lands on a whole family. That’s where Tony Dean comes in. Tony is the co-founder of Pink Cans For Cancer, a Long Island nonprofit that turns everyday recycling into direct, practical support for people navigating breast cancer and other cancers. The mission is simple: take what would end up in a landfill and convert it into real help that makes the week survivable.
We talk about how Tony’s early years doing long distance breast cancer bike rides evolved into something more personal after losing his close friend and mentor, Kristen Martinez. From there, the work becomes intensely human and surprisingly specific: sending meals to a home after surgery or chemo, lining up landscaping so a family doesn’t come back to a stressful mess, helping someone afford a wig, and stepping in when support systems are thin. Tony also breaks down the behind the scenes reality of running a recycling fundraiser, why schools are such a powerful partner, and how sponsored pink bins let local businesses give back while building community visibility.
We also get into growth pains, including the moment an overloaded “cancer van” made it clear they needed more help, plus what’s next if they can hire someone to take the organization to the next level. If you want to support, check out C4C.org for events like the October 14 fundraiser at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown, follow Pink Cans For Cancer on Instagram, and share the show with someone who cares about cancer support, community nonprofits, and recycling for good. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us: what’s one small action you’d actually do this week to help a family facing cancer?
