Jay Young revisits his conversation with Rhett Bennett, Founder and CEO of Black Mountain, recorded at the 2024 NAPE Expo.

Rhett shares how growing up in a Kentucky coal mining family shaped his path into the energy business and how he went on to build Black Mountain into a diversified energy company with operations spanning exploration and production, frac sand, midstream, saltwater disposal and battery metals.

Jay and Rhett discuss the strategy behind identifying opportunities early, scaling businesses quickly and adapting as the energy industry changes. Rhett also breaks down the growth of Black Mountain’s frac sand business and how innovation in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing helped transform U.S. oil and gas production.

They also look at the remarkable growth of the Permian Basin, the technology that made that growth possible and the broader role of American energy production in the global economy, geopolitics and energy security.

It’s a conversation about entrepreneurship, deal-making, innovation and creating value in one of the world’s most dynamic industries.
