Dive into the fascinating world of Charles James Fox (1749-1806), a distinguished British Whig parliamentarian and fierce adversary of William Pitt the Younger. A vehement critic of George III, Fox threw his weight behind the American colonists during the War of Independence. He was a fervent advocate of religious freedom, personal liberty, and abolitionism in the parliamentary assembly. Despite his notorious reputation as a gambler and lover, Fox found peace and joy in his marriage to Elizabeth Armistead, a former concubine of the Prince of Wales. Their home, St. Annes Hill, served as their haven of serenity. Fox is best remembered for his compelling oratory skills.
