SimEarth von 1990 bietet eine komplexe, ganzheitliche Erdsimulation. Das Spiel basiert auf der Gaia-Hypothese, die in den 1970er Jahren federführend durch den britischen Wissenschaftler James Lovelock entwickelt wurde. Die Gaia-Hypothese beschreibt die Erde als eine Art großen biologischen Organismus. In seinem Text "Gaias Game" zeigt Niklas Schrape, dass SimEarth im Ergebnis jedoch der Auslegung von Gaia durch den französischen Soziologen Bruno Latour nähersteht als der ursprünglichen Gaia-Hypothese – und dies obgleich das Spiel unter Mitwirkung von Lovelock persönlich entstand. SimEarth macht dadurch eine grundlegende Spannung "spielbar", die unser Verhältnis zur Natur immer schon charakterisiert hat.
