One of the reasons I began this podcast is that I believe the stories we tell become the legacy we leave. And for far too long, too many stories have been muted; especially those of women. Today's guest has made it her life's work to change that.

Before she ever stepped behind a microphone, Dr. Julie Marty-Pearson spent nearly twenty years in higher education leadership. With a doctorate in Organizational Psychology, she led institutional assessment, accreditation, research, and compliance efforts across multiple universities. She taught psychology, statistics, and leadership. She built systems, analyzed data, helped institutions articulate their mission and measure their impact. In other words — she understands voice at the structural level.

But in 2020, during a season of global disruption and personal reflection, Julie made a courageous pivot. She stepped away from institutional leadership and into the entrepreneurial dream she had carried since earning her doctorate. What began as curiosity about podcasting quickly became a calling.

In 2022, she launched The Story of My Pet — a show born of her lifelong love of animals. What started as storytelling about beloved pets expanded into advocacy, education, rescue, fostering, and adoption — and is now ranked in the top 5% of podcasts globally.

In 2024, she launched Podcast Your Story, helping purpose-driven women grow their visibility, confidence, and business through podcast hosting and guesting.

And her newest podcast, Still Becoming: Women Unmuted, might be her most personal work yet.

Because when women unmute their stories, something powerful happens.
We remember who we are, help others feel seen and heard, have permission to speak, to share, and to be fully human.

Welcome to this very special episode that's airing during the week of the 2026 Podcasthon — the world's largest podcast charity initiative, bringing together over 2,100 podcasters from over 60 countries. The two visionary co-founders, Jeremie Mani and Yves Delnatte's mission is to raise awareness for local nonprofits and charitable causes that are effectively changing people's lives.

Today's episode highlights a non-profit, and rather exceptional person, who's doing just that as a result of experiencing his own profound life change, the kind that happens in seconds, the kind you never see coming, and the kind that demands everything you have to keep moving forward.

In hockey, a line change is a substitution of players — usually an entire line — jumping over the boards so the game can keep going at full intensity.

But what happens when life forces a line change you didn't choose? My guest today knows that answer intimately.

Matt Brown was a 15-year-old sophomore at Norwood High School in Massachusetts, a student, an athlete, and hockey player with a huge passion for the sport. Then, during a high school hockey game in 2010, everything changed. With one hit, one moment and one collision with the boards, Matt sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

In his 2019 memoir Line Change Matt Brown, along with co-author Todd Civin, chronicle Matt's life after that injury, detailing his journey through paralysis, rehabilitation, and his infectious "Never Quit" attitude while navigating college, motivational speaking, and running 13 assisted marathons.

His memoir highlights the tremendous support from his amazing family, friends, and the hockey community worldwide, including his beloved Boston Bruins, and stands as a positive testament to resilience and holding onto Hope in the face of adversity.

In 2020, the Matt Brown Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit was launched. Born from Matt's compassion and empathy to support individuals and families affected by illness or injury—especially those living with paralysis—through advocacy, resources, and community. We'll be talking about Line Change and The Matt Brown Foundation in this special Podcasthon episode.

As the opening of my podcast informs you, I do not live in Minneapolis, but across the country in Sonoma County, CA.

I've been thinking a lot about voices lately. Not the loud ones. Not the ones on cable news.

The steady ones. The voice that explains something complicated and suddenly you can breathe again. The voice on stage that reminds you who you are. The voice that says, "You're not alone."

For almost forty years, Teri Parker Brown has been that voice in Minneapolis.

She's stood on the stages of Chanhassen, The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and History Theatre in Saint Paul.
She's narrated for Blue Cross,American Express, 3M and many other name brands.
She's guided people through healthcare modules, commercials, and stories.

Her voice is described as warm. Smart. Inviting. Like a best friend.

And yet… she lives in Minneapolis; a place that has known beauty — and tension. Community — and conflict. Immigration enforcement activity has increased and as a result, protests fill the streets.

But today isn't about headlines. It's about what it feels like to love a place —and stay with it when things feel complicated. With deep respect, I'll be speaking with Teri about her career and what happens when the place that shaped your voice becomes unsettled and uncertain?

Today, I'm joined by someone whose story is both deeply personal and universally inspiring. My guest, Hannah Castillo, is a Certified Professional Coach with a background in mental health counseling. She holds a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling and a dual bachelor's in Psychology and English.

Hannah has dedicated her career to helping others find balance and hope, and what makes her story so compelling is that she knows firsthand how hard that balance can be to achieve. Living with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, Hannah faced years of unanswered questions and difficult symptoms while trying to build her career and family life.

Through it all, she discovered the power of meditation and mindfulness, not only in managing her own health, but also as a transformative practice for her coaching clients. Her podcast 'Love Your Calm: mini-mediations' won the 2025 American Writing Awards for Podcast of the Year, the Goodpods #1 Podcast of the Month in both the Meditation and Alternative Health categories, the cover story in the summer issue of the Women Who Podcast magazine, and winner of their 2025 awards in the 'Changing the World' category.

Today, we'll hear how even a few minutes of stillness a day can open the door for us to move from fear to hope. And I'm especially excited to talk with a fellow coffee aficionado and budding latte artist.

It's not often that I'll get to introduce a guest whose moniker is "banana-brained and voice-trained"! But joining me today is a woman who is the embodiment of quirkiness, versatility, and her own words "a bit unhinged".

From clown noses to stage and to your favorite streaming platforms, Jo Yuan has covered a lot of ground...and that's saying something given she's been in the entertainment industry just shy of 6 years, and in voiceover for five of those years.

She's made audiences laugh, cry while pondering social biases through the roles and characters she's played, whether it's in a packed house, on a TV set, or through your earbuds while narrating the Harper Collins' audiobook Counterattacks at Thirty.

An Asian American actor of Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean heritage, Jo's career spans theatre, television, voiceover, and comedy, and brings authenticity, wit, and heart to every role. She's trained in the Meisner technique, on-camera acting, clown and sketch comedy to long-form improv, as a graduate of the now defunct Second City Conservatory, in Hollywood. Her stage work includes performances at East West Players, IAMA Theatre, Artists at Play, and as a company member of PlayGround-LA.

As a voice actor, Jo's credits read like a streaming guide - with an impressive list of dubbing credits, lead and recurring roles on Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, and Amazon Prime and Nat Geo. In 2024, Jo was named one of 24 New Digital Audio Narrators by Macmillan Audio, selected from over 350 applicants.

Jo is also a proud and active member of the Television Academy, the Asian American Theatre Artists Collective, and the century old Los Angeles Breakfast Club, to name a few. In addition, she is my fellow Door Builder in the Building Doors VO Campaign! From the stage to the booth, Jo's work is a testament to the power of curiosity, craft, and connection.

If you're tuning in for the first time, welcome, and to my longtime listeners, you know that throughout the years you've heard me interview some of the most iconic voices behind your favorite commercials, video games, documentaries, etc... But today, I'm pulling back the curtain on a voice that gets much less exposure—but is crucial to running a successful voiceover business as she's the Unsung Hero of a Voiceover Virtuoso who's all about the business of sound!

Sandra Russell may not be a name that you're familiar with, or have a voice you recognize—but her fingerprints are all over the success of one of the top voices in the VO industry; that of her multi award-winning husband Ian Russell, aka The British Voice, who as a side note, joined me as a guest on my other podcast, 'The Voice Kitchen: where recipes and voice talent blend! Where he shared his recipe of a very British staple, Raised Pork Pie.

Sand ra joins me today to talk about what it's like being a voiceover wife and mum and how she's applied her education and business acumen to being Ian's business manager and creative consultant. Add to the mix, the award-winning voiceover careers of their two daughters, Eva and Lauren, and occasionally when Sandra steps in front of the mic, and you've got quite the family affair!

We'll hear how a Christmas present for a one-day class, launched a lucrative international voiceover career for Ian, to co-running a thriving studio from their family home. Sandra's story is one of quiet leadership, business savvy, and possessing a keen eye for the right opportunity. Someone we'd all be so lucky to have in our corner, no matter what creative endeavor we're pursuing.
