EPISODE 1: What is Gravity?
Key Highlights from the Episode:
- One of the most famous concepts of Physics – gravity, or gravitation is one of the fundamental forces of the universe. It is an attraction, or pull, between any two objects with mass.
- Weight is actually the earth’s gravitational force acting upon us, pulling us towards its center. It is illustrated by the formula: W = mg, or Weight is the product of our mass and the acceleration due to gravity (g) of the earth.
- The value of (g) for moon is about one-sixth that of earth, around 1.63 meters per second per second.
- The formula to calculate the force of gravitation between two objects is F = G•m1m2/d^2.
- The value of G is 6.67 X 10^-11 Nm2kg-2, the mass of earth is 6 x 10^24 kg and the radius of the earth is around 6400km. (Approx)
- Galileo once did a famous experiment about gravity where he dropped balls from the Tower of Pisa.
- German mathematician Kepler published his three laws governing the shape of their orbits and their speed along those orbits, but did not discover why they moved that way.
- Newton, following an idea that had long been discussed by others, said that the closer two objects are to each other, the more gravity will affect them.
- Mistakes in Newton's theory were corrected by Albert Einstein's theory of General Relativity.
- FUN FACT: In free fall an object's motion balances out the pull of gravity on it. This includes being in orbit. So, when you jump off the roof of a building, you don't feel weight. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Thank you for listening to this week's episode of The Hall Of The Unknown, and I hope you have learnt something new as well. Tune in again next week for the next installment of the show, on something completely new.
