In the latter part of the second century and the early part of the third, Carthage was home to the influential Tertullian, the first notable Latin writer of the church whose works have endured through time. His writings often reflect a stern, monastic mindset, characterized by the principles of Touch not, taste not, handle not. Despite this, Tertullian possessed considerable oratorical and scholarly talents that earned him a reputation that may exceed what his theological insights alone would suggest. He approached his faith with earnestness, which makes him more admirable than many who, while dismissing him, are steeped in their own profanities. Ultimately, we cannot judge a man who genuinely honored Christ, defended essential Christian doctrines, and tirelessly advocated for what he believed to be true religion. Tertullian became entwined with the Montanists, known for their rigorous practices and genuine enthusiasm, and not only embraced their beliefs but also defended them, often looking down upon the broader Christian community from which he distanced himself. He later distanced from the Montanists to establish his own sect, the Tertullianists, which persisted in Africa until the time of Augustine, whose efforts ultimately led to their decline.
