Great London Podcast – Episode 5: What Does a Local Councillor Actually Do? Understanding Local Government in London | Canary Wharf & Tower Hamlets

Welcome to Episode 5 of the Great London Podcast.

In this episode, Mohamed Aboshanab explains what local government in the United Kingdom actually does and why local councillors play a crucial role in shaping the communities where we live and work.

Many people hear about councils and elections, but very few understand how local government decisions directly affect daily life. From housing policies and planning permission to schools, public safety, transport, parks, and community services, local councils influence many aspects of our neighbourhoods.

With the upcoming London Local Elections taking place on 7 May 2026, this episode explores the real responsibilities of local councillors and why community participation in local democracy matters more than ever.

In this episode we discuss:

• What local government does in England
• The role and responsibilities of a local councillor
• How councils influence housing, planning, and community development
• Why areas like Canary Wharf and Tower Hamlets are changing rapidly
• Why residents should stay informed and engaged in local decision-making
• How voting and civic participation help shape the future of London

Canary Wharf is one of London’s most dynamic districts, home to global businesses, growing residential communities, and thousands of professionals. As the area continues to develop, local government decisions will play a key role in balancing economic growth, infrastructure, housing, and community wellbeing.

The Great London Podcast explores the future of London through conversations about leadership, business, local government, urban development, and civic engagement.

Hosted by Mohamed Aboshanab, this podcast aims to make important topics about London easy to understand and accessible to everyone.

Episode 5 continues the series of discussions about the upcoming London Local Elections 2026 and how residents can participate in shaping their communities.
