Sintesi dell'editore
In the Dagara tribe of West Africa, women are valued as the source of the world's wisdom. They are valued as dreamers, as diviners, as the backbone of the community; the core of human survival. But what can the teachings of this indigenous culture show us that will transform the way we live?
On Women's Wisdom from the Heart of Africa, Sobonfu Somé, author, teacher, and the first woman empowered by the Dagara elders to impart their teachings to the West, invites you to peer into a world where people remain closely connected to nature, their ancestors, and spirit, and to learn how to use powerful rituals to restore balance within yourself and with those around you.
Sobonfu Somé, whose name means "keeper of the rituals", was raised in her small village and sent by her elders to continue her education in the United States. With Women's Wisdom from the Heart of Africa, Somé shares authentic spiritual teachings of her tribe that were formerly handed down only within the circle of Dagara village life.
These teachings are founded on a worldview that honors animals, plants, and trees as our elders, and human beings as the newcomers. From this revered relationship with the natural world, we learn how to live in unity with our environment, and create a deeper connection with spirit. How do we find this connection to spirit? For the Dagara, ritual is the gateway. Distilling the essential practices of her people, Sobonfu Somé shows you how to check in with spirit to receive guidance, observe the sacred spaces of your home, harness the energy of the elements, strengthen your relationships, create balance in your professional life, and much more.
What are your unique gifts? What were you born to contribute? What can your community do to assist you? These questions are asked of every unborn Dagara child while still in the womb. Now, you have the chance to explore these and other questions, and to discover your inimitable gift as a woman with Women's Wisdom from the Heart of Africa.

A glimpse into a culture that’s life changing
Growing up as a woman of color in America is very interesting and different when you compare it to that of the women in Dagara culture. This book opened my eyes a lot to a lot of healing and purpose I’ve missed out on simply because of my upbringing and what I’ve been exposed to. I loved hearing about how they celebrate a woman’s first menstrual period, just as much as I loved hearing about how they interpret death and grief. I appreciate this book so much because it has truly given me insight into what beliefs or traditions I want to instill in my life going forward. It’s never too late to start over!

I enjoyed the in depth information of this African culture's female ways of initiation and wisdom. Having a first hand look from someone within the specific tradition was a rare privilege.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Women’s Wisdom from the Heart of Africa?
The knowledge and watchfulness of the Elders over the young initiates in their spiritual travels during initiation.
What does Sobonfu Somé bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Here voice and soothing yet expressive manner truly bring the story and her feelings behind it to life.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
As a student of Dreams and Dream interpretation, I appreciate the insight of how this particular tribe/group are taught at an early age to call their Soul back in the morning upon waking because it has been traveling in the Spiritual world during sleep and the importance of starting the day with prayer to set the tone.

Intro to Rituals
This book offers a good introduction to the diversity of rituals in traditional life. It also provides a concise overview of the purpose of rituals, important elements of a ritual and methods for developing rituals in today's world.

The power of words
I love this book, and I'm so glad that the reading is by her too. Sobonfu Somé, has reignited the passion for my path. Through her wisdom, the importance of African voices, for the world at large, and for Africans in particular, has been reinforced. Her lyricism, and poetic prose, serve to highlight the wisdom of her words. It deeply saddens me to realise, in relishing these words, how limited our access is to voices like this. But in, what I view as, true Sobonfu Somé fashion, I shall take this grief as a call to action.
This is a guidance that all women deserve! That the world needs. With deepest gratitude, I commit these words to stone.

Women's wisdom from the Heart of Africa
This book did not provide me with any wisdom. I felt that this book was filled with too much superstition and too many tribal rituals to benefit me personally. I feel that I wasted my money.

Lots of words but little content
An excited narrator rushing through the book which sadly was filled with cliches, platitudes and generic statements, awash with little meaningful content. Hugely disappointing.

Insightful
I love this perspective as I am also going through a Dogan initiation which is mainly male orientated and there is not much based on a female”s role within the community other than to have children and fallow the males lead which is reminding me of the western perspective of life that I have turned from, so I guess there is more initiation for me to go through.
I do wish it was a different voice narrating the book though. It would make it easier to listen to and grasp. Most chapters I had to repeat and it leaves me wondering what the meaning of Ashe is as I have not heard it in West Africa’s traditions and only from Nigerian and people of the west going into African cultural research and practices. I also tend to find when things annoy me as much then there are untruthfulness within.
I have already recommended the book to two of my friends.
Thank you for sharing your work with us.
