Enter Tim Corrigan, assigned to protect the pair against the fatal harvest of their own violence. Corrigan soon takes their place on the deadly spot.

Intriguing set up, not as effective overall and pretty easy to call.
Also, once you read all these Corrigan mysteries, some of the generously used hard-boiled tropes really start to grate on you, or at least show their age - female characters that are all either “tarts” (whores and “nimphos”) or angelic beauties that fall at our hero’s feet at first sight, the protagonists’ peerless display of toughness and so on.
The better ones make up for it by plot, characterization, even humour, but when they don’t it’s a bit of a chore.
