Outdated

The book is outdated and impractical. I would not recommend it especially for new managers or leaders

Useful tips from a man's philosophy on leadership

Useful tips from a man's philosophy on leadership .
many useful concepts and nuggets:
• Ready-fire-aim.
• Eliminating peoples excuses for doing lousy work such as : I am underpaid, I am under-titled, or we dont have the right type of talent or title .
• Picking your fight: To Fight the "Them" and "Us" lines that separates people in a company.

Reading this book was inspired by watching this TedTalk YouTube video on leadership.

Understanding the difference between management and leadership is critical:

I found this book useful and informative, it confirmed certain beliefs I have held and provided a certain framework of principle to understanding how to practise leadership.

I would recommend you read this book if you are on your journey to formulating your own philosophy / pradigm-shift on leadership and o how to lead.

Leadership Content More Pertinent Than Ever!

In today's unrealistic "politically correct" environment, it's refreshing to read/hear how reality was lived in past generations. This message is absolutely pertinent in today's business cultures!

Unbearable

This book is one long rang criticizing everyone and everything Robert Townsend experienced in his career. It’s choppy, arrogant, and generally bad advice. Don’t waste your time.

worth listening to

There were some parts that made me think. I never had bad experiences with admin work when I was young. When he talked about how common it was for admins to be expected to be baristas, and how they were not utilized as skilled professionals, it made me realize that I had just been fortunate. I was never asked to make a phone call for a manager or organize their schedule for them. That is crazy. If a manager can't even manage to make a phone call or manage his own schedule, that's a problem. I'm glad that he was one of the people who made my positive experience as a young admin possible. Now it seems like companies are going back in the direction of crazy unskilled managers who are on a creepy narcissistic ego trip. I wish more CEOs would listen to this.

Good info

Good info and management strategies. However, the harsh language in some of the cases cited in the book are in my opinion not the best way of addressing people or exercising Authority

Out of date

Much of the info is no longer relevant and the advice that is relevant is underwhelming.

radical

A very different view to management. I liked some of the radical suggestions made by the author. I however didn't like the disjointed manner the book was presented. Sounded like there was a number of paragraphs wererepeated and the reading didn't flow well.

superb book with a refreshing angle.

I absolutely and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Townend's inspiring approach to leadership is wonderful, and given he was behaving like this in the 60's he was evidently ahead of his time. We could certAinly do with more of the same. Anyone involved in leadership or aspiring to be a leader should take note from this book, it is absolutely the right approach.
