Typhoon is the story of a steamship and her crew beset by a tempest and of the captain whose dogged courage is tested to the limit.

Captain MacWhirr was an ordinary man. However, when his steamer Nan-Shan blunders into a hurricane, he and his crew must pull together to survive. A great classic, very well narrated

I have wanted to read this book for a long time and finally downloaded it. I loved it and had a hard time putting this story aside. The outcome of the ship and crew are never certain and the captain is an interesting character with depth. The assortment of characters that are on this ship adds to the drama and seems to be well picked from experience the author had at sea. The description of the storm is as good as it gets bringing the reader into the horrible situation of the ship and her crew. The narration is stupendous and earned the already great story an extra star. There is no reason not to listen to this classic, highly recommended.

Great story, great prose, great reading

While Typhoon may not be one of Conrad's deepest works, the story of the typhoon and the Captain who gets the ship through it and the demoralized crew he rallies, is hold your breath exciting. The descriptions of the storm tossed ship are fantastic. If this book were on the best-seller list today it should be number 0. I mean better than first. The narrator understands this story and it shows in his reading. As you can tell, I really like this book.

Incredible experience, masterful performance.

After listening to this book narrated by Roger Allam my body and mind feel like I had actually been there. I'm still wrung out and stunned. What an experience! ...And I am still alive to tell the tale.

Literature Disguised as Adventure Tale

There are passages in Conrad's novels that should no longer be so stunningly beautiful to me, since they are so frequent they should be expected. But they are. They are worth rewinding (a tricky task in the digital age). Allam's narration is flawless-picks the spirited prose of Conrad right off the pages.

Great Classic Story

What an awesome story about an English Sea Captain, his young First Mate along with several other great characters who went through a terrible hurricane while on a steamer in the China Sea. This book was written 120 years ago, so they talked a little different and used some words that you don't hear much now in our vocabulary, but I think it's pretty cool, not a hinderance. One reviewer called this book racist, he posted his review Jan 2021, I think that person is way out of touch....Like I said this was written around the turn of the 19th century and it was not considered racist against the Chinese People then., that's just how people talked. I want to add that Roger Allam did an exceptional job of narrating. So if you want to read a great classic pick this up. Another great story to read by Joseph Conrad is Heart of Darkness. I had read Typhoon about 30 years ago, so when I saw that it was in the Audible Plus catalogue I snapped it up.

Classic Conrad

I love Joseph Conrad's stories. The detail he goes to in describing his characters and setting. His subject matter also.

Perseverance in unimaginable conditions

The story of a ship and its crew persevering through terrible events is a well-trodden literary path. Conrad was one of the first and his version is perhaps one of the best. The late 19th century language is beautiful and the narrator does an outstanding job with the different characters and accents. It is never clear how the story will end. Will the ship, its crew, and its passengers arrive safely?

Still, the ending left me unsatisfied. Was this all there was? Somehow I expected more, but the book is only a short novella – just 82 pages in one of the editions on Amazon.

A wonderful story, well told.

A Joseph Conrad masterpiece, its only fault is its briefness. Roger Allam's reading was impeccable and left me curious if there were other classics read by him (unfortunately there isn't much)

Well done Roger

Excellent narration from Roger Allam. Really enjoyed his different accents and characters, think he does an Irish and Scottish accent very convincingly. Quite poetic language used to describe the typhoon, its effects etc. I quite like the characterisation, no one is perfect, all have their own faults and foibles. Probably a better book to listen to than read, took me to and from a conference, perfect length!

Awesome

No risk of a spoiler here .... the plot is of a ship in a storm ! .. but Conrad’s ability to relate this short story well is awesome. The writing is of a period with racial prejudices that would be unacceptable to publish today and there s a small cast who are credibly characterised .
What’s notable are his descriptions - whether of the ship, or specifically the storm which are intense, very detailed with good prose, capturing the event graphically and amazingly, avoiding repetition. Conrad as a seaman experienced scenarios, ships and sailors like this and it’s reflected in a real sense of authenticity. The narration is excellent, with accents not overdone and overall for those who enjoy a good yarn (and Conrad) this is “unmissable”

not enough. tension

The story sounded, from the description as if it might be pretty good. As it turned out it was just the opposite. it ramvled and the narration was too slow. A literary account with an attempt at a twist at the end but not much to say for itsellf really and the accents were appalling. Don’t waste your time. never judge a book by its title that’s the lesson to be learned from this one.

A little gem of a novel

Conrad is close to his magnificent best in this intense sea story. The characters come to life amazingly from minimalist descriptions. His descriptive prose is of the highest order and few authors tell a sea story better than Conrad. Roger Allam narrates beautifully. With his velvet tones he really should record more audio books.
