Sintesi dell'editore

Two Treatises of Government is the most famous and influential defense of limited government ever published. Written during a period of increasing opposition to the restored English monarchy, this work was published anonymously in 1689. It is a classic account of natural rights, social contract, government by consent, and the right of revolution.

This presentation discusses the life of John Locke, the evolution of his ideas, and the political conflicts in seventeenth-century England which led to the writing of Two Treatises of Government. The famous Second Treatise, which contains Locke's central ideas on rights, government, and revolution, is examined in detail. Special attention is given to Locke's theory of private property, which has influenced law and government for over two centuries.

One of my favourites

This was the first Audio Classics product I owned, by Knowledge Products. I love it. The individual roles are spoken by actors, with dramatic quality. The script is by historians and is balanced and accurate, though occasionally with a libertarian gloss (though that is likely to be inherent in a work about Locke). Note, this product covers BOTH of the Two Treatises of Government. The first is about ecclesiastical government, and is rarely studied but is very interesting. The second is about civil government and remains a classic. I have listened to this numerous times and it remains one of my favourites.

A history of Two Treatises of Government

Well written and researched. If you looking for an abridged version of John Lockes book, this is not that. However, it is a compelling, interesting, and informative book.

The Naration is Top Class.

Essentially an Audio-only Documentary

I would suggest listening to this audiobook while reading the original text. This audiobook merely provides an historical overview and context of what led up to John Locke writing Two Treatises of Government and the main points of his treatises. It taught me a lot of important things about English History (and thereby American History through John Locke’s influence on the American founding fathers) that I had never heard before. I highly recommend everyone listen to this audiobook!

Not the Thomas Locke book, but an overview

Not the Thomas Locke book, but an overview of his life and the general themes of the book.

A very high standard as ever.

I knew late Stewart history but had no idea how o where John Locke fitted in: thank you.

This series really does the job: there are enough substantial quotations to acquaint the listener with the subject’s literary style and thought processes and it’s altogether a brilliant and generous gesture to put all this stuff out without charge.

A thoroughly enjoyable, excellent production.

This production takes difficult, at times turgid, original material, and renders it in such a way as for the lay reader to get a great overview of the philosopher and his work Two Treatises of Government, with the key points made clear. Of particular merit is the use of different voice actors for the different parts, aiding comprehension. Bravo!
