A pioneering work of gothic horror, The Vampyre introduced the elegant, aristocratic vampire to English literature and forever changed the course of the genre. The story follows the young Aubrey as he falls under the spell of the enigmatic Lord Ruthven, whose charm conceals a sinister secret. As their paths cross across Europe, Aubrey uncovers a terrifying truth that tests his courage and threatens those he loves.
Rich in suspense, atmosphere, and supernatural intrigue, John Polidori's novella laid the foundation for the modern vampire tale, inspiring generations of writers—including Bram Stoker—and securing its place as a landmark of gothic fiction.
John William Polidori (1795–1821) was an English physician and writer best known for The Vampyre, one of the earliest and most influential vampire stories in English literature. Written in the wake of the famous ghost-story challenge at the Villa Diodati in 1816, his novella established many of the defining characteristics of the sophisticated literary vampire and remains a cornerstone of gothic horror.
