Julien Benda's The Treason of the Intellectuals (La Trahison des Clercs), first published in 1927, is one of the twentieth century's most influential critiques of the changing role of intellectuals in modern society. Writing in the aftermath of the First World War, Benda argued that thinkers, writers, philosophers, and scholars — those traditionally devoted to the pursuit of truth, justice, and universal values — had increasingly abandoned their responsibility to remain independent of political passions. Instead of acting as impartial defenders of reason, they had become advocates for nationalism, class interests, racial ideologies, and partisan causes. This abandonment of intellectual integrity, which Benda described as a form of "treason," represented for him a profound moral and cultural crisis. Central to Benda's argument is the distinction between universal principles and temporal political interests. He believed that the true vocation of the intellectual was to defend ideals such as truth, justice, and rational inquiry, even when these conflicted with the demands of governments, political movements, or popular opinion.
