Sintesi dell'editore

1870s - Missouri

Margaret "Peggy" Thomas and her husband, James, lead a simple and peaceful life; she tends to the farm while he works as sheriff in the nearby town of Bleak Knob. Their evenings are spent doing the thing they love most - being together.

One afternoon, after picking up fabric at the general store, Margaret watches helplessly as James is gunned down on the sidewalk in front of her. Days of mourning turn into weeks and then years, filled with little more than grief and alcohol.

A telegram, announcing the upcoming trial in Arizona of one of the men responsible for James' death, rouses the widow from her misery. Neither inexperience nor the prospect of a long and difficult journey will stop Margaret from facing her husband's killer.

Along the way, Margaret unexpectedly gains some new companions as she is joined by a free-spirited gypsy woman and a diminutive moonshiner. Together, they will face the danger and violence of the Old West, but only Margaret will be able to answer the question that's plagued her from the beginning: Is she seeking justice or revenge? Told from Margaret's dark point-of-view and in the epic tradition of True Grit comes The Survival of Margaret Thomas.

Brace yourself, not for the faint of heart

This story reveals the lawlessness and evil that took place in what we refer to as “the wild, wild, west”. The author spares no details as to the evil that existed during the time that settlers established their homes “out west” as he follows Margaret, “Peggy’s” journey to see her husbands killers brought to justice, even if she must intercede in ways she never thought she was capable of.

A Tale of Courage

When faced with the past, Devils often hold us back from living. This book shows the strength of what lies within us all.

A little too violent for me

I liked the story featuring a female’s perspective on a western story. But this is not my gendre and I was put off by the violence - even if it’s realistic.

The narrator was perfectly cast

An excellent, gritty western. The storyline maintains traditional western elements, with unconventional twists. A delightful read and perfectly performed.

Kept my attention...but oh so brutal/graphic in its content

I kept going through thick & thin but I would not recommend for the faint hearted! Nearly vomited at times and I’m not even squeamish ordinarily!

Skip it

Awful. The dialogue is nothing but cliches and so out of period as to be almost funny. “Wrap my head around it”- come on. The text mentions she was a school teacher and proud of good grammar. Ha! The reader makes her sound like a mismatch of Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies and Festus from Gunsmoke. First book in 11 years of Audible I have not finished.

Very wordy

I was not a fan of this book. I was really hoping it would get better but I felt let down at the end. There were a few good part through the book but there were also a few unnecessary graphic events in the book. There are times when a story can’t help but be graphic but I didn’t feel that they help the story in this case. The performer did a good job narrating the story and it’s characters. I guess I didn’t click with the overly long descriptions in parts of the book but it may have been the intentioned the writer as part of the main character’s personality.

Worst Audible Choice I've Ever Made

Where to begin? First there are no redeeming qualities or characters in or about this book. The story is told from the perspective of a macho woman in the old west. In fact, all the female characters have more than their fair share of testosterone. It's read by a female (I think), who sounds like she is long past menopause and needs to give up her two pack a day smoking habit. All of the male characters in this story are either rapists, murderers, villains, or in the case of their trusty sidekick, a charlatan snake oil peddler who was more like an old time circus sideshow character. But the worst part about this book for me was the pointless, disgusting and gruesome description of a murder scene that they just happened upon. The victim was a prostitute and the author repeatedly portrays prostitutes of the Old West as women to be either pitied for their unjust persecution or admired for their fortitude and courage. I guess I'm lucky this read was included with my membership or I'd not only want a refund but possibly cancel my membership.
