Sintesi dell'editore

More than half of the world's oil comes from Persian Gulf states. Political instability and religious strife here threaten to interrupt the world's economic routines. Two presentations examine the history of Persia, Iran's attempt to westernize, and the backlash of religiously fervent Moslems against the West and against each other.

The World's Political Hot Spots series explains the basis of conflicts in some of the world's most politically sensitive areas. Many of these regions are in today's headlines, and tensions recently have become violent in virtually all of them. Each presentation covers up to 10 centuries of background, revealing how and why today's problems occur.

NOT a Persian Gulf states history!

What disappointed you about The Persian Gulf States?

This is not a short history of Persian gulf states. There is nothing about UAE, Qatar and Bahrain history in this book. This is a short and very selective history of Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

What could Wendy McElroy and Sheldon Richman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not at all. Narration is fine but when it comes to quotes, it's totally ridiculous. Actors with weird accents, try to talk like an Arab or Persian king and it's more funny and distracting. As an Iranian I can tell you that often time they have Indian accent instead of Persian or Arabic accent!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Peter Hackes?

He is fine.

Useful basic background piece

For someone very new to the various arab states, this is a good first history primer. A bit dated, but useful for the low cost.

Good for a very summarized Gulf history

If you are expecting deep details, this is not the right audiobook. however, if you would like to understand main events within Iran and the Gulf up until the Gulf War, it gives a good idea of the region.

Too short I was looking for a detailed overview

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes but only for beginners

Has The Persian Gulf States turned you off from other books in this genre?

The book was too short and did not provide any information about the roots of the major parties

What about Peter Hackes’s performance did you like?

excellent

Do you think The Persian Gulf States needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes. Something in greater detail linking the current world view with the historical perspective
