Sintesi dell'editore

When a physicist is murdered in LA it seems the killer has no fear of publicity, leaving the body on The Mulholland overlook, a site with a stunning view over the city. And when it's discovered that the victim turned over a quantity of a lethal chemical to his killer before he died, Harry knows he has more than just a single death to worry about. Alongside the forces of Homeland Security, Harry realises he must solve the murder or face unimaginable consequences.

Strong story, superb performance

Len Cariou's readings of the Bosch novels are superb. I've bought several just for this. Handles dialogue immaculately, especially humour. Keeps you listening. One of the shorter Bosch's, with a touch of "24" (the whole case is done and dusted in under a day).

Not finest moment

Maybe I should take a breather from Bosch for a while because after reading this one I just feel like slapping him. Regardless of final twist who would hide a witness during a terrorist alert/investigation. Think Harry is starting to disappear up his own backside and that never ends well!

Another Good Read

Loved the way this was so unpredictable but delivered the quality all the same. A big fun of Michael Connelly!

Too much sax in the violence

Once again the excellent narration is randomly interrupted by discordant musical notes which nearly swamp the story. Perhaps it was felt that this racy tale needed mood Muzak to add depth and colour, but all this rank production managed was a distraction. A good story, well read, which deserved to be listened to rather than endured.

Thin

I love the Bosch series, and many of the familiar ingredients are here. But the core plot is simpler than usual, and there is less underlying action, hence also very little character exploration.

Another great Bosch story

Great story with a nice twist at the end - love the music touch - it gives the narration a bit of a “Bosch” atmosphere

Great, but just too short.

Great book, as are all of the Bosch books so far, but way too short.

The low point in an otherwise excellent series

When "reading" many of the previous Bosch series audiobooks, I have struggled to take a break in listening but this one was a struggle to get through, I eventually got to the end at the third attempt - each time starting from scratch, a few months after losing interest on the previous occasion. Given the premise of the story (a potential terrorist attack using radio-isotopes), it should have been exciting and full of suspense but somehow I found the interplay between the characters to be lazy and laboured. I have found the subtleties in the plot of the previous books in this series to be funny and intellectually stimulating but this time they were continually spoon-fed and spelled out to the reader, like someone who ruins a really good joke with poor delivery. To make matters worse, despite the author noting that he took advise from experts in medical physics when researching for this book, he gets nuclear fusion and fission confused - for me, this was an embarrassing mistake. I guess Michael Connelly had "a bad day at the office" with The Overlook and I can forgive him this given the high quality of the other Bosch books. This won't put me off downloading Nine Dragons.
