Sintesi dell'editore
Meet Samuel: stalled writer, bored teacher at a local college, obsessive player of online video games. He hasn't seen his mother, Faye, in decades, not since she abandoned her family when he was a boy. Now she has suddenly reappeared, having committed an absurd politically motivated crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the Internet, and inflames a divided America. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she's facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel's help.
As Samuel begins to excavate his mother's - and his country's - history, the story moves from the rural Midwest of the 1960s to New York City during Occupy Wall Street, back to Chicago in 1968 and, finally, to wartime Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. Samuel will unexpectedly find that he has to rethink everything he ever knew about his mother - a woman with an epic story of her own, a story she has kept hidden from the world.

The Nix comes alive with outstanding narration
I was pleasantly surprised by the interpretation of Ari Fliakos for the incredibly complex novel by Nathan Hill.
He managed to separate each character in such a distinctive manner, I was never confused - which would be easy in an audiobook with over 20 hours of duration - and was in constant awe.
I highly recommend this novel/audiobook for anyone interested in politics, entertainment and broken relationships - it does draw some pretty realistic parallels to the current political scene in the United States.
A fantastic debut indeed from Mr. Hill.
And I'm definitely checking out other books narrated by Mr. Fliakos.

Every part of this story is perfect. The characters intriguing, the plotline compelling, the resolution satisfying and above everything else, it tastes like the truth.

Brilliant heart-breaking eloquence
Brilliant in every way. Worth every minute... A sprawling American novel - long but luscious - beautiful, extravagant and elegant. The theme: “Seeing ourselves clearly is the project of a lifetime.” Recommend.👍🏻👍🏻

Draws you in and keeps you hooked until the end!
If you could sum up The Nix in three words, what would they be?
Compelling, Complex, Rich.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Nix?
There really are far too many memorable moments to single any one out.
Have you listened to any of Ari Fliakos’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No, but the next book I read will be narrated by him. After The Nix, I'm a fan. He's a fabulously talented narrator who makes the many characters in this book, male and female, instantly recognisable and interesting.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh many times and also gasp in amazement at the plot twist and turns. I especially appreciated how the writer and narrator helped me to have empathy for many of the characters and a sheer dislike for a few others.
Any additional comments?
This book draws you in from its first pages. The writer skillfully hooks you into each character's story in the present tense, while leading you backward and forward through time to introduce others. The storylines kept me so engrossed, that I began to resent being interrupted. It's been some time since a book kept me so fully engaged as this did from start to finish.

Great but a few niggles
Really enjoyed it overall. A great novel. In places I found there was a lot of added description and detail, which didn't add to the story and was slightly boring. Also the narrator's voices for the young girl student and Ponage were incredibly grating - a bit overdone. That said, the plot was engaging and exciting, and the characterisation excellent. I would recommend! Just get through the overly detailed / annoying voice bits.

Clever and very entertaining
I found this hugely entertaining, vast in its sweeping coverage, often in forensic detail, of the topics of grief, dysfunctional family life, online gaming, 1960's US political history and more. The clever and intricately woven plot line jumps backwards and forwards in time but at no point loses its way. The main characters are brilliantly realized as are the supporting cast, especially the truly disturbing amoral Laura and poignant, virtual world addicted Pwnage.
Yes, perhaps at times the descriptive passages are overly long but this is more than compensated for by the author's sparkling style and humorous observation.
Ari Fliakos' superb narration only adds to the enjoyment of the whole. I can't wait to see what the very talented Nathan Hill writes next.

Not what I expected
I should probably have researched the author. The novel is funny, brilliantly written and well observed, and the narration top-class, but from the blurb I didn't expect what is essentially a literary sitcom.

Excessive blabber
I'm sorry, I was very bored with the excessive blabber even though the storyline could have been entertaining. I struggled to finish the book but kept going in hope that I would get hooked.
