Sintesi dell'editore

Having entered the British Navy at the age of 12, Horatio Lord Nelson achieved the rank of captain at the age of 20. As captain, he was quickly recognized as a magnetic and controversial figure. He triumphed at Cape St. Vincent and the Nile, but failed at Tenefife and Boulogne. With the glories of Copenhagen and Trafalgar yet ahead of him, his ardent passion for Emma Hamilton, the wife of a British Ambassador, cast a heavy shadow over his career.

Audacious in battle (he once ignored a superior's order to cease action at Copenhagen by putting his telescope to his blind eye and saying he could not see the signal) and winner of some of Britain's greatest victories, Nelson possessed an extraordinary amount dash and courage, thus rendering him one of history's great romantic figures.

great story!

always love Frederick Davidson narrating, and this is a wonderful, if biased, biography of one of the most interesting individuals in modern British history.

too detailed

Not enough on his personal relationships and a lot on minute detail of battles

Narrator ugh

I really wanted to hear this story, but the narrator with his excruciating nasal twang is an insufferable snob.

Great account

Great account, it’s written in British tongue and in 1816 so it can be difficult to follow, but other than that it a very fun book to listen to.

Amazing sailing history of battle few know.

Nelson was beyond in some ways anything before and after. Also how important sailing skills were for battle and survival at sea. The current navies are so different. The current ships of sail and sailors have a history few know except for the pictures. This book fills in the gaps. Great narration.

Annoying reading style

My first Audible book I could not finish. Although a fan a Naval history, the narration is at best - overly theatrical and annoying. Could not tolerate the performance and it overshadowed the story.

A book of it's time.

Written shortly after Trafalgar by one of the romantic poets it has a sense of the time and the man.

Poor

Pompous presentation. No story to the story. Who was Horacio Lord Nelson anyway? A straight arrow whiner?

Struggled with This One

I am sure the contents of this audio book are very interesting but I really can't get on with the accent and tone of the narrator. I've stuck with it for about an hour now but I am continually finding myself having to rewind as I have lost concentration on it. This has not happened with any of the other audio books I have downloaded. I'm sure it is just a personal thing but I would advise you to listen to sample recording carefully and ask yourself whether you can engage with that voice for a prolonged period of time.

Superbly narrated and written with care and feeling, this account of Nelson's life is inspiring as it is informative. Highly recommended.

Nelson review

The book was full of fact but not that interestingly put forward. The orator was monotone and you have to concentrate hard to maintain focus.

Excellent narration completely “in character”

I can see a few folks have been tripped up by the tone of the narration. The point is that this book was written by a contemporary of Nelson who was a noted historian, social reformer and poet. He experimented with laughing gas with Humphrey Davey and corresponded with Emily Brontë - telling her women shouldn’t bother with literature. He’s not a disinterested modern observer and had to be brought to life this way. Good book. Great narrator. Thanks.

a little tricky but in the end very good

given when the book was written the language is a little hard to follow at first. this is also attributed to the style of narration but as I persevered both of these things began to make sense. if you like history it's very good.

Narrators perfectly in tune !

The narrators character voice is perfectly in tune with the period as well as being inline with the characters and military services he’s reading.
This purposeful effort helps the end user drift off into the moment with ease.

Very good 👌

Annoying Posh “Frightfully” Reading

Nelson was one of my favourite boyhood heroes. His story is still captivating. The reading, however, has made it impossible for me to keep listening. The reader’s voice/accent sounds “frightfully” and condescending and his knowledge of the pronunciation of sailing terminology is lacking.

Great research. Annoying voice with no research

I could not finish this.
The story was good, and good research on that score but it was handed over to someone with what I describe as a condescending tone. Added to that the reader made the mistakes of not having researched how certain nautical terms - particularly with regard to sailing vessels - are pronounced.
Having said that, it was worth every penny - as a free offer.

Naval hero

I was very excited to read about this man of history , but very quickly I found that I could not cope with the rather pretentious voice of the reader. Very putting off, sharp and cold. So only managed a couple of chapters. Such a shame as I wanted to know more.
