great story!
always love Frederick Davidson narrating, and this is a wonderful, if biased, biography of one of the most interesting individuals in modern British history.

Dull and facile
The worst biography of Nelson ever.

Narrator ugh
I really wanted to hear this story, but the narrator with his excruciating nasal twang is an insufferable snob.

Great story ruined
Who hired this narrator?. He sounds like he is straight out of a Dickens novel. Great story but unlistenable.

Essential reading to understand Nelson the man
A great yarn about a great man. Could have used some foot notes to track further details and to explain nautical terms.

A first class read. Particularly as it was written in the same period as the subject. One could visualize oneself in the period
Southey perfectly reflected Lord Nelson in this work. His attention to detail and investigative skill is manifest. I do however have one major criticism. The silly affected voice of the narrator was very distracting. As I have other books narrated by this gentleman I am confident that he was wasn’t attempting to emulate the period.

A book of its time, but…
Certainly of interest to those deeply interested in the history. It certainly shows its age as a work of literature, but it could have been made listenable. Unfortunately the narration is so wretchedly pompous that, almost from the beginning, it had me rooting for the French. I cannot recommend it.

Great account
Great account, it’s written in British tongue and in 1816 so it can be difficult to follow, but other than that it a very fun book to listen to.

Struggled with This One
I am sure the contents of this audio book are very interesting but I really can't get on with the accent and tone of the narrator. I've stuck with it for about an hour now but I am continually finding myself having to rewind as I have lost concentration on it. This has not happened with any of the other audio books I have downloaded. I'm sure it is just a personal thing but I would advise you to listen to sample recording carefully and ask yourself whether you can engage with that voice for a prolonged period of time.

I am sure this could be a good book.
I bailed out after 3 hours as I had to concentrate too hard due to the outrageous accent of the narrator. Shame.

Nelson review
The book was full of fact but not that interestingly put forward. The orator was monotone and you have to concentrate hard to maintain focus.

Rule of 3
Very entertaining. A book written in 1813, 7 years after the death of Admiral Nelson, it has a modern feel to it.
The author was a Poet Laureate, dead at 31, he wrote Goldilocks and the 3 Bears along with biographies of other great men of his era.
If you have any interest in the statue in Trafalgar square, read this book.

Great book - horrendous Narrator - worst ever
great book - but this narrator doing it a great deservice (on purpose it almost seems) with his sneering over the top drawling nasaly speaking - what a shame to ruin what could have been an epic audible book, thanks mate!

Kenneth Williams after a bottle of brandy
The Nelson story is such a fantastic one and I’m afraid this narrator just wrecks it. Sounded quite sloshed and taking the piss.

Beautifully read and written
A very touching memoir of a great hero, beautifully read and written, The biography was written and published within a decade of Nelson’s death by a poet laureate, so conveys the feel of the early nineteenth century which is emphasised by the style of the reader. A great experience!

Awful narration!
A fascinating story of one of England’s great heroes - ruined by a pretentious narrator! What a disappointment.
