The only EQ novel that picks up right where the previous one left off. That’s interesting in itself as it allows more psychological exploration of the characters, although that doesn’t really come to fruition. The story reads like a classic EQ mystery, with good old-school detective work, a cast of likely murderers, a good one-two with the Inspector, lively interactions with other characters. The solution is peculiar too, and the sensitive subject matter is treated with about as much sensitivity as could be expected for the time.
