Suspense in Ancient Egypt -- Fun and Eudcational

What did you love best about The Golden Goblet?

My 10 year old reluctant reader son loved this book. I thought the narrator was great and I was happy to listen along. My son was disappointed it wasn't part of a series. The added plus was that it was educational and got him excited about Ancient Egypt.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Golden Goblet?

There are many exciting moments -- enough that it was too absorbing to listen to at bedtime.

What does Charles Carroll bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narrator for both children and adults to listen to. There are unfamiliar names and places in the book, due to its setting in Ancient Egypt, and I could imagine my son being frustrated with that if he had to read it without benefit of the audio. As it was, the names were handled so naturally it wasn't a barrier.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was a very uplifting book by the end.

Kids like it

My 8 year old daughter said, "I wish it was longer!" The 6 and 10 year old enjoyed it also.

Egypt lovers, read this book!

I read this novel with my class every other year. It was the only one for which I did not have an audio version. With great gusto, I began to play this version to my class. It didn't take long to realize that the fantastic story line was being buried underneath the narrator's repetitive pattern of emphasis in each sentence, no matter the content. I ended up reading the story to them myself, as I have other years. The book is fantastic, just read it the old-fashioned way. Audible, I would love for you to record this one with a different narrator. Love the story.

Rare gem of a story

Written in the 60's, this is a great book on ancient Egypt. Details of the time period is quite accurate. Depiction of everyday life of a ten year old boy growing up alone, vulnerable yet able to hold on to what is right & honorable. Good narrator.

Contains a lot of violence

This story is NOT appropriate kids. Ther are descriptions of cruel beatings way too often. I would not reccomend it for kids. Maybe high school and up, might be o.k.
The language and plot are interesting. It is historically accurate, but I cannot believe how harsh some of the descriptions were. I am angry at myself for letting my kids listen up to chapter 3. No more.

Great historical fiction

Loved it. It is fast-paced and suspenseful. It gives a clear picture of ancient Egypt and kept the attention of all my children. I highly recommend.

Enjoyed this story

My children (age 10 and 7) thought the narration could have been better but they enjoyed the story. I thought it was good all round - would definitely recommend.
