A proposito di questo titolo

French's department store was famous for the rare merchandise it offered its elite clientele. But no one there could be proud of its latest exclusive window display: the bloodstained corpse of the owner's wife. Ellery Queen and his father, Inspector Richard Queen, soon discover that this palace of commerce is a viper's nest of fear, jealousy, suspicion, and hatred, where love is cheap and the price of honor marked down. But worst of all is the mysterious mocking mastermind who is out to turn the glittering store into a bargain basement of murder.

The second novel in the whole series, it suffers a bit from “early installment weirdness” (for instance, Ellery is said to be off in Italy now with his wife and children) and perhaps also just from plain “early installment awkwardness”: Ellery is close to insufferable for most of it (not in an endearing way, but in the “I want to close this book” way), a character clearly modeled after an ideal that was later, thankfully, softened and layered if not dropped entirely. The case, also, develops in a rather too didascalic and theatrical way. Also a noticeable amount of age-appropriate (I suppose) sexism here and there.
Still, there are lovely moments between the characters (the opening scene, Ellery and his friend, Ellery and his dad and so on) and the novel picks up rhythm half way through. All in all, it’s worth a read, while also keeping in mind that the series gets much better.
