Sintesi dell'editore
Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case.
New Year’s Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina “hot-sheets” motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can’t be controlled. Within hours the general’s wife is murdered hundreds of miles away. Then the dominoes really start to fall.
Two Special Forces soldiers - the toughest of the tough - are taken down, one at a time. Top military commanders are moved from place to place in a bizarre game of chess. And somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the US Army, Jack Reacher - an ordinarily untouchable investigator for the 110th Special Unit - is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have.
But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war. And he’s taking a young female lieutenant with him on a deadly hunt that leads them from the ragged edges of a rural army post to the winding streets of Paris to a confrontation with an enemy he didn’t know he had. With his French-born mother dying - and divulging to her son one last, stunning secret - Reacher is forced to question everything he once believed…about his family, his career, his loyalties - and himself. Because this soldier’s son is on his way into the darkness, where he finds a tangled drama of desperate desires and violent death - and a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.

"Textured, swift, and told in Reacher's inimitably tough voice… Child has few peers in thrillerdom." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"The best showcase of Child's talent to date...one of the best thriller writers at work." (Rocky Mountain News)
"The Enemy sizzles with suspense and action. Child sets a breathless pace." (Orlando Sentinel)

Good book but.......
I really hate it when they release a previously released book and call it a “new release”. I do t remember the name of every reacher title so I see a new release and I get excited and get it.

Not a new release. This was from 2003
It's very annoying when a previously released book is listed as a "New"release. I bought 2 today. If I have purchased it previously it should not allow me to purchase it a second time at least without a warning. Thank goodness I was able to return it and retrieve the credits.

I read this book years ago. Saw a new Jack Reacher book and downloaded. Wasted credit. This is pathetic

THIS IS BOOK 1
I enjoyed this book but I'm not sure why it's listed as book #8 when it was clearly written before book #1. His Mom and Brother are still alive in this book. This book take place in 1990.
If you haven't started the series yet, this is the place to start.

Rerun
Wow - two book releases in one year - I was thrilled. But two minutes into the book and I realized this is not a newly written book, but a previously released book. Felt like I had been duped.

Release Date Scam
audible tricked me into thinking this a new book, when in fact its from 2004. They need to put a disclaimer on their releases. I feel scammed.

NOT A NEW RELEASE!
Anywhere else, this might be fraud, but as it is, Audible posted this up as a "NEW" release, and it isn't. I actually own this book in CD, and mistakenly bought it again, thinking it was something "new".
The book is a well written "flashback" to the days when Reacher was in the service. You learn a little more about Reacher, Joe, and their mother.
Dick Hill IS Jack Reacher, when I hear these books. No other narrator can come close.

Not the Reacher we're excited by.
Droning on and on like the world's longest who-done-it. Was to long on analysis and solving the mystery. Way too short on Classic Reacher ACTION!
So this was to be a 29 year-old Reacher, which would be at his physical and mental best. We like it when the Jack we love, comes to the aid of an underdog. Someone who cannot fight for themselves. Reacher takes on 5 or 6 at a time. The action hero Reacher was MIA in The Enemy. No righteous retribution. Narration was great.

Procedural detective work returns in The Enemy
Another first person installment in the series, The Enemy follows our titular hero through a winding path that brings home closer and closer to a secret that brings tough consequences to Reachers door.
