Sintesi dell'editore

Stephen King's epic fantasy series, The Dark Tower, is being made into a major movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Due in cinemas February 17, 2017 USA.

In the fourth powerful novel in Stephen King's best-selling fantasy quest, The Dark Tower beckons Roland, the Last Gunslinger, and the four companions he has gathered along the road.

And, having narrowly escaped one world, they set out on a terrifying journey across the scarred urban wasteland to brave a new world where hidden dangers lie at every junction: a malevolent computer-run monorail hurtling towards self-destruction, Roland's relentlessly cunning old enemy, and the temptation of the wizard's diabolical glass ball, a powerful force in Roland's first love affair. A tale of long-ago love and adventure involving a beautiful and quixotic woman named Susan Delgado.

And the Tower is closer....

My favourite of the series!

Loved the flash back of Roland's first love, at first I didn't want to leave the present and the main characters of the series, but then I didn't want to leave Hambry and come back. Frank Muller gets 5 stars for narration!

Gets better and better

This has been my favourite book in this series so far. Brilliant performance by Frank Muller as well. Very seldom am I wrapped up in a story as I have been in this one. And when it has ended I am sure I will wish that I could have voluntary amnesia so I may re-experience it as I did this first time.

Best in the series so far!

The best in the series so far!

The Dark Tower books just keep getting better and better! If you enjoyed The Waste Lands, you will love this!

Most of Wizard and Glass is spent filling out some of Roland’s back story and it is a humdinger! Frank Muller owns Mid World. He brings so much character and feeling to all the characters. He style and delivery suits this story so well to my ears.

Can’t wait to get stuck in the next in the series!

Tough going

A good continuation of the story, if only because it is a continuation albeit split in two, but the extended flash back that took up the largest portion of the book was odd, unevenly paced, far too long and not really enjoyable as a story, especially compared to the last two books. There is of course some wonderful world building all over it and the rest of the book outside of the flash back make it an essential read for those insisting of getting into these books. Here's hoping the next one is better.

Roland and Susan

Another richly imagined world full of memorable characters that blur the boundaries between good and evil. This is the basis of all Stephen King stories. It makes you ponder the grey areas of ethical decisions and the hold that Ka seems to have on all of us. A must read for the whole of Roland's story.

Everyone loves a flashback episode

I really enjoyed this book, it tells an excellent story from the formative years in Roland's past without truly revealing as much as it brings up new questions. We really get the 'western' feel from this story, which blends beautifully with the medieval upbringing of Roland's childhood and immediate future.

Expectedly brilliant

King is a gifted writer who builds great castles with a few bricks, but not everybody wants to meet the shadows in all his many tales. Those who do revel in his gift and are never disappointed.

Stephen kings epic tale

What did you like most about The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass?

Stephen King has created an interesting group of charactors and some wonderful lands. This book is number four but is a prequel to the books before. The story is based around a young Roland and sets up the story brilliantly. Action packed could even read it as a stand alone book. Really enjoy the dark tower books.

What other book might you compare The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass to, and why?

Lord of the rings, nightwatch.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

Perfect.voice for all the characters

Any additional comments?

So Roland DOES have a heart

What did you like most about The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass?

Roland's blossoming relationship with Susan Delgado. Also, the relationship with Roland's original Ka-Tet of Owain and Cuthbert. You understand a lot of Roland's motivations and why he is the way he is from the events in this story.

What did you like best about this story?

Roland showing how smart and astute he is despite his distraction with Susan Delgado. Also that he can demonstrate the difference between a gunslinger and those who failed the test and are outcast.

Which character – as performed by Frank Muller – was your favourite?

I enjoyed Cuthbert Allgood's character and Frank's performance of it. It is slightly distracting hearing the name pronounced differently to how I expect to hear it though. Not that it is Frank's fault because King confirmed that it should be pronounced "Key-ooth-bert" instead of "Cuth-bert" as I'd expect. On a related note, King pronounces Deschain as "Des-chain" whereas Frank (and I) would pronounce it more French as in "Desh-ain". I only mention it as King reads "The Wind Through the Keyhole" himself.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Naturally, the death of Susan Delgado (No spoiler there because it's confirmed in earlier books) and the fear for Sheemie's life.

Any additional comments?

A brilliant story that gives us the background of Roland's life before his quest for the Dark Tower. I think that "The Drawing of the Three" is a better story but many would disagree. Definitely worth reading as a King fan even if you dislike the Dark Tower series.

Drawn Out but ultimatley Worth it.

Read with Excellence yet again by Frank Muller. I was excited to get some back story and learn a little of The years before the quest for the tower, However upon listening to the story I found myself getting bored...

Susan's Charcter is...well...annoying. The book seems to drone on with the same 'we can, we can't, we must, we mustn't' I found myself willing Susan's inevitable fate to come sooner and sooner and when it finally does...I didn't care. In fact I was Glad.

Ria and Cuthbert are by far the saving grace of this book as well as the tanatalising eferences to The Stand.

Ria, performed skin crawlingly good by Frank Muller and written with perfect horror by King, makes the story worthwhile, after a long trudge through Magis and the planning/counting we finally get some insight into Rolands Character and why the tower means so much to him. Just wish it would have come sooner.

Bottom line: Great to get some backstory and insight into Roland, introduction of a fantastic new enemy, But get to it already!

Struggled but will perserve

Maybe this series isn't for me. I took it on with trepidation. I can't fault the book or the writing, I just found it really long and this took me 3 months to finish. I just couldn't get into it at times and had to rewind repeatedly.

HOWEVER I will continue with the series because I have invested so much time in it and I want to see what happens to the kartet. I just need a little break, so I'm going to read a couple of quick light hearted 'chick lits' before the next tomb.

Freud Would Have a Field Day

I haven't read too much Stephen King and what I have read, was several years ago, so I don't recall cringing quite this much with The Shining.

His obsession with describing every inch of female anatomy, gets quite uncomfortable and his sex scenes just made me skip forward. Apparently he's married, but this makes me feel sad for his wife....

He can paint a very descriptive picture of people, places, landscapes, so why he feels the need to follow every one of them with a "like a..." and further description, escapes me. Especially when the references aren't exactly common place. "Black smoke billowed into the sky... like a funeral pyre". I don't know if many Vikings read his work, but that adds nothing. Removing them would greatly reduce the length of the book, help making it tighter and less drawn out.

As for the constant sexual references to so many subjects, Freud could make a career out of him. Referring to the glow of a glass ball as "labial pink", was a particular high point.

My journey with Roland will end here. I have managed four books and heard so much about where King takes the story, that I don't think I could stick it. So for me.... They reach the Dark Tower and live happily ever after

Wonderful Fantasy Romp

From the very start of the book, this one had me hooked. I consider it the strongest of the Dark Tower material; a wonderful insight into Roland’s past providing much needed backstory.

Back in time

Interesting to see the root of where Roland has come from. Although hard to suspend disbelief to believe he is 14. Still, engaging King and the character development and narrative style still hooks you in.
