Originally named A Tangled Skein, this is the first Sherlock Holmes story. The real strength and the unique quality of the novel lies in the introduction of Holmes and Watson to each other - and those dark early scenes when a corpse is discovered in a derelict house in southeast London. The ultimate crusader against crime and criminals, Holmes' genius is revealed here for the very first time.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes are overshadowed by the event with which they close - the meeting of the great detective and Moriarty, the Napoleon of Crime. When "The Final Problem" was first published, the struggle between Holmes and his arch nemesis, seemingly to the death, left many readers desolate at the loss of Holmes, but it also led to his immortality as a literary figure.

The Performance Puts You In The Story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes to be better than the print version?
Yes
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes because it's a collection of short stories and I like that best.
What does Derek Jacobi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A proper old accent and sense of drama.
Any additional comments?
It is not easy to find a book both my husband and I would enjoy listening to on a long trip and this was perfect. My need for mystery, his love of classics, it all worked out together. Also, since it was short stories, our attention stayed high with each new mystery.
You'll enjoy the historic piece at the beginning of the author talking to the audience.

Interesting & little known short stories
What did you love best about The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes?
Audiobook contains little-known short stories on Sherlock Holmes & his adventures with trusty sidekick Watson.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dr. Watson as he is a complementary character to Holmes.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Elementary my dear Watson
Any additional comments?
Derek Jacobi narrates the stories so well that I could just imagine the scenes as if they were in a movie or tv series. He does however expend effort on the Southern American accents which do not seem to sit well on his British accent. That is, at times he makes some of the American characters sound drunk. Overall, excellent narration which brings to life the main characters and the stories.

Excellent in every way except the end is missing!
It troubled me that the last story "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" ended rather abruptly, Holmes still seems to be giving his explanation and there isn't the typical Holmes / Watson reflection at the end. I dug out the novel and there is about half a page missing! It's not just my download because the "Audible hopes you've enjoyed this programme" is still at the end of the recording.
This really isn't acceptable, the idea that you could listen to almost a whole novel and then be denied the ending isn't what you expect from Audible. When Audible resolve this issue I will give this audiobook the 5 stars the stories and narration deserve.

The casebook of Sherlock Homes
Beautifully read by David Jacobi who brings each case vibrantly alive. A wonderful mixture of bedtime (in my case!) short stories, each one totally different.

Classic Holmes
Having listened to much of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes I was keen to listen to these outings. Derek Jacobi's narration is brilliant as always. I found the mysteries here are not quite as gripping as some of those I have listened to before but still very entertaining. This is a collection of short stories.

FAB-YOU-LUS darling
Great stories, great narration, Arthur Conan Doyle had such an immense imagination to come up with so many of these shorter stories. They nip along at a pace, each one suitable for a commute to work. Whenever I watch the TV adaptations I wonder why they seem so slow?!

Brilliant
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'd recommend to a friend, definitely! It was a fantastic listen, the stories lived up to all I had heard on the books. It was quite easy to dip in and out of too with the short stories so it was pretty accessible which was handy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes?
I would have to say my most memorable moment was the monkey man.. you'll understand when you get there!
Which character – as performed by Derek Jacobi – was your favourite?
Watson

Brilliant
You know Sherlock Holmes. You've seen adaptations on TV, you know his stories. But, listening/reading the books is just wonderful. By reading, you gain a deeper understanding of Holmes, of Watson, of Victorian England and Derek Jacobi is an amazing narrator. He is perfect for the job. So even though you may be familiar with the stories, have a listen and instead of being preoccupied with 'who done it' (cos you probably know already), enjoy the journey and allow Holmes to lead you there in his own unique way.
