Jack London
Jack London is among the greatest adventure writers in American Literature, and The Call of the Wild is his masterpiece, a work that takes us where few tales have dared: into the mind of an animal. Buck is taken from the warmth of the Santa Clara valley to work as a sled-dog in the frozen Yukon during the Gold Rush. There he is forced to lose his domesticated ways and rediscover his natural instincts. Brutalized and beaten with the other dogs, Buck is finally saved from this cruelty by John Thornton. In this kind man's care, Buck learns how to be loved, an essential element in the art of survival. He becomes devoted to his new master in a way that is touching and profound. When tragedy strikes his new master, Buck seeks a terrible revenge and heeds the call of the wild.
